PhD scholarship Climate forcing by very large basaltic eruptions

Overview

PhD scholarship Climate forcing by very large basaltic eruptions: an oxygen isotope study of the Fur Formation

A 3-year PhD scholarship is available at The Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen, starting 1 March 2011 or soon thereafter.

Project description

The PhD project aims to constrain the size and duration of global climate changes due to very large basaltic eruptions in the North Atlantic Tertiary Igneous Province by diatom-recorded seawater temperatures in Denmark in the early Eocene.

The Eocene marine Fur Formation is interbedded with c. 180 layers of volcanic ash, and several of the ash layers are interbedded with laminated diatomite and preserved in calcareous concretions. The Fur Formation ash layers are known from locations over much of western Europe and indicate volumes of up to more than1000 km3 of erupted materials. Diatom frustules of biogenic opal (Opal-A) constitute the bulk of the Fur Formation and are not diagenetically altered.

Diatoms are known to be suitable for oxygen isotope determination of the water temperature where they formed. It will thus be possible to evaluate the temperature evolution related to several large volcanic eruptions. The project involves limited field work in Northern Jutland (Denmark).

The project is a collaboration between Department of Geography and Geology and the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland.

Qualifications

The candidate should hold a degree in geology (MSc or equivalent). We seek a creative person with a broad background in geology and a technical inclination who can work both independently and in close teamwork. Documented laboratory experience such as microdrilling, mineral separation, isotope and microprobe analysis, as well as field experience from volcanic areas and with sedimentary geology is an advantage.

We expect that the candidate will publish in international peer−reviewed journals, write a PhD thesis within the project duration of three years and assist in some teaching within the Department. Qualified candidates can speak and write in English.
