Edinburgh Legal Education Trust PhD Scholarships

Overview

The scholarship is available for postgraduate research in Scots law at the University of Edinburgh leading to the degree of PhD. Research in any area of Scots law, private or public, is eligible for funding, and the subject may be studied in a comparative or historical context. The scholarship is offered by the Edinburgh Legal Education Trust, which was formed in 1996 for the advancement of legal education. The Trustees wish to award a single scholarship for study beginning in either September 2011 or September 2012.

Eligibility

The scholarship is open to anyone who, by the start of the PhD programme, holds an honours or a masters degree in law (or equivalent), and who is accepted by the University of Edinburgh for postgraduate study in an appropriate area. Further details about postgraduate study at Edinburgh may be obtained from the Postgraduate Office, School of Law, Old College, South Bridge, Edinburgh EH8 9YL (www.law.ed.ac.uk).

An application to the Trust may be made in advance of being accepted by the University of Edinburgh, and should be made in advance in the case of an applicant intending to begin postgraduate study in September 2012. Applicants applying only to begin their studies in September 2012 may disregard the requirement on the School's scholarship form that a complete application for admission must be submitted before the scholarship application was made. However, such applicants should ensure that their application includes full details of their grades in individual courses, and that they arrange for two referees to submit references to the School of Law Postgraduate Office - by email to pg.law@ed.ac.uk - by the closing date.

Duration

The scholarship is awarded for one year in the first instance, but will be renewed annually for a further two years, subject to satisfactory progress.

Value

The scholarship has the same value as a Studentship awarded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). This means that the scholarship comprises fees at home students’ rate (currently £3,400) and a maintenance award (currently £13,590). In addition, a limited amount of assistance may be given by the Trust in respect of research expenses, but this will not normally exceed £400 in a year.

Fees will be paid by the Trust directly to the University of Edinburgh. The maintenance allowance will be paid in four equal instalments on 15 September, 15 December, 15 March and 15 June.

Alternative funding

The scholarship is intended only for those who are unable to obtain alternative funding. Wherever possible, candidates are expected to apply also to other funding bodies. For information on funding, see http://www.law.ed.ac.uk/pg/scholarships.aspx. Note that the AHRC will not usually support students who do not already hold a masters degree.

Part-time employment

Scholars are expected to devote their whole time to the study of their subject. Part-time teaching and other work relevant to the Scholar’s research may be undertaken but must not exceed three hours per week. For any other paid part-time employment, the permission of the Trustees is required.

Scholars must inform the Scholarship Administrator of any other awards which they receive during the year. The Trustees reserve the right to review the level of the scholarship in the light of the availability of other funding.

Applications and closing date

Applications should be made via the School of Law scholarship application form, available at

The Scholarship Administrator, Dr Andrew Steven, School of Law, University of Edinburgh, Old College, South Bridge, Edinburgh EH8 9YL (email: andrew.steven@ed.ac.uk) (telephone 0131 650 2037) would be glad to discuss applications and to give informal guidance.

Applications should normally be received by 2 May 2011. (Please note that the same closing date applies for applicants intending to commence their study in 2011 as for those intending to commence in 2012.) The Trustees reserve full discretion to offer, or not to offer, a scholarship.
