Wellcome Trust Doctoral Studentship (ETHOX) at University of Oxford

Overview

Wellcome Trust Doctoral Studentship in the Ethics of Collaborative Global Health Research

The Ethox Centre, Department of Public Health, University of Oxford

The Ethox Centre has been awarded a major Wellcome Trust Enhancement Award to establish an international research network on the ethics of collaborative global health research. The network, which is a joint initiative of the Ethox Centre in Oxford and the Wellcome-KEMRI Unit in Kilifi, Kenya, will build ethics expertise and capacity both in the United Kingdom and in developing countries - with a particular emphasis on building capacity at the Wellcome Trust’s Major Overseas Programme sites. The research activities of the network will focus on five themes: community engagement; global ethics governance; the ethics of research collaboration; the roles and responsibilities of research actors; and challenges in empirical ethics research. The award will fund DPhil studentships, the development of on-line resources, and a range of training activities. The network will also act as a focus for the encouragement of local research initiatives in developing country sites. The network’s Principal Investigator is Professor Michael Parker.

Applications are invited for the third Wellcome Trust studentship to carry out doctoral research on the ethics of collaborative global health research. The studentship will be held at the Ethox Centre, which is a research centre located in the Division of Public Health at the University of Oxford. More information about the Ethox Centre and its research programmes can be found at www.ethox.org.uk. It is expected that the successful applicant will spend a significant proportion of the time of their studentship working in a developing country.

The successful applicant will carry out research in one of the Network’s five areas of interest, as outlined above. Applicants must be eligible for admission as a probationer research student to the University of Oxford (see graduate studies entrance requirements at:

http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate_courses/apply/application_guide.html). Studentships will be for a fixed term of three years and will cover all fees plus an annual stipend at Wellcome Studentship rates (for 2011 this will be £19,339).

Closing date for applications: 12 noon GMT on 7th January.
