The Food Security Center (FSC) Scholarships

Overview

The Food Security Center (FSC) is a university center of excellence in development collaboration at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. FSC is one of five excellence centers of the pro- gram “exceed – Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation”, which is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany. FSC’s mission is tomake effective and innova- tive scientific contributions in research, teaching, and policy advice to eradicate hunger and achieve food security in collaboration with partner research and education organizations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and national and international development and research organizations. Thematically, FSC’s activities deal with issues of sustainable food availability, food access, food use, and food utilization.

The PhD program “Global Food Security” aims at increasing the PhD students’ previously gained scientific knowledge and skills relevant to food security related issues in an interdisciplinary approach. Besides the course work, the PhD students will work with the research staff of the relevant institute of the University of Hohenheim to conduct a specific research project contributing to FSC’s mission and relevant for the PhD students’ research work, taking into account the individual interests and educational needs of each single PhD student.


Target Group

The PhD program aims at young scientists from developing and developed countries from all continents, who are:

- Outstandingly qualified university graduates with M.Sc. degree and specialization in development-oriented agricultural sciences or related disciplines (incl. natural sciences as well as economic and social sciences)
- Interested in an interdisciplinary and international education in food security relevant issues
- Able to complete the doctorate within three years

FSC awards up to 29 scholarships for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers for a period of 4 to 36 months in 2012. The Center wishes to attract outstanding PhD students and postdoctoral fellows pursuing a career in academia or development collaboration. The scholarships aim at increasing their previously gained scientific knowledge and skills relevant to food security related issues. Furthermore, FSC aims at establishing an active, long-lasting collaboration with the supported researchers and their home institutions.

FSC offers three categories of scholarships:

1. Sandwich scholarships for PhD students (6 months);
2. Research scholarships for visiting postdoctoral researchers (4 months);
3. Excellence scholarships for FSC-supported PhD program at theUniversität Hohenheim (36 months).

Admission

For admission, the applicant for the PhD program “Global Food Security” has to provide proof of:

- Completed graduate studies in agricultural, nutritional, natural, social, economic or political sciences, or related disciplines (preferably with a focus related to food security issues);
- Outstanding study performance: excellent or very good Master’s degree or equivalent with a grade of A (exceptions B);
- Track record of knowledge in the proposed field of study;
- Excellent proficiency in oral and written English (TOEFL with a minimum of 213 points computer based, 550 points paper based, 79 points internet based or equivalent is precondition);
- Sufficient private means to cover minimum living expenses (if not applying for an “Excellence scholarship”).

Furthermore, the applicant must:

- Submit a high quality proposal with a research topic that should have a significant relevance to food security issues and should fit into the overall research program of the potential supervisor at the University of Hohenheim (the research topic has to be based on one of the research themes on the “List of research themes” from FSC’s webpage);
- Be able to conduct innovative research;
- Be an outstanding personality and have excellent interpersonal skills and team spirit;
- Be able and willing to work well in an interdisciplinary, multicultural environment with individuals from different scientific, societal and cultural backgrounds and with organizations from the public, private and civil society sector;
- Be available for the entire period of the PhD program.

The application deadline for all scholarship categories is September 30. Selection is carried out on a competitive basis and the decisions (i.e. invitations) will be communicated up to December 17.
