O’Brien Fellowships at McGill University

Overview

O’Brien Fellowships for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism at McGill University.

The O’Brien Fellowship was established in 2005 through a very generous gift from David O’Brien (BCL ’65) for outstanding graduate students studying in the area of human rights and legal pluralism in the Faculty of Law.

The Fellowship is Awarded annually by the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office upon recommendation of the Faculty of Law. Fellows become members of the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism.

Eligibility

•Candidates must be registered in the LL.M. or D.C.L. program in the Faculty of Law of McGill University in the academic year.
•Only candidates with an outstanding academic record will be considered.
•There is no restriction based on citizenship or age.

Selection criteria

•Academic excellence
•Originality of the proposed research in the field of human rights and legal pluralism
•Availability of supervision in the Faculty of Law
•Diversity of candidates and topics


Value and tenure

Value: $25,000 per annum, renewable once for LL.M., twice for D.C.L. (if eligibility is maintained). scholarization.blogspot.com

Fellows who are international students are entitled to a tuition fee waiver, bringing tuition down to the level of a Québec resident, for each year in which they hold an O’Brien Fellowship. Fellows can also receive one conference travel grant per year from the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office.

Fellows registered in the D.C.L. program will be provided with office space in the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism, if available.

Application deadline: January 15.

Application procedure

Applicants must submit an O’Brien Fellowship application to the Graduate Studies Office of the Faculty of Law by the deadline for application for admission to the LL.M. or D.C.L. program.

Applicants must also arrange for two (2) referees, who must each complete a recommendation letter and fill out the O'Brien Fellowships Referee Report. Letters and reports must be mailed to the Graduate Studies Office of the Faculty of Law, in an envelope marked with the applicant's name and "O’Brien Competition" and signed across the flap on the back. (These letters and referee reports are distinct from the documents required in your application.)
