Postdoctoral Research Fellow on Proteomics, Friedrich-Schiller-University

Overview

The Centre for Innovation Competence SEPTOMICS at the Friedrich-Schiller-University is offering a postdoctoral position on Proteomics in the “Host Septomics” group at the University Hospital Jena headed by Prof. Hortense Slevogt. The ability to perform the job will be the primary consideration, thus, we encourage all – regardless of their personal background and status – to apply. The tentative start date is February 1st, 2011 or soon thereafter, and the position is limited to 3 years.

The “Host Septomics” group wants to analyse the cellular responses to an infection with the most common bacterial sepsis pathogens on a molecular level. Our goal is to establish integrative models linking intracellular signal transduction, gene expression dynamics and ultimate cellular responses in vitro and in vivo using statistical modelling approaches to investigate the pathogenesis of sepsis. On the basis of the compiled models we hope to identify novel biomarkers to diagnose septic infections unequivocally and as early as possible and to predict the immune status of patients (www.septomics.de).

By joining the “Host Septomics” group you will be part of a young and dynamic team consisting of international researchers. The position is available to study cellular outcomes at ‘systems-level’ in response to different perturbations (such as gene knockdown etc.) with high resolution mass spectrometry methods. Therefore, a cutting-edge MS platform for unbiased proteome identification and quantification is available in the lab. The department aims to continuously improve the proteomic platform, hereby allowing for rapid and comprehensive analysis of mammalian proteomes. In addition, the successful applicant will use protein and peptide pull-down as well as Biacore approaches to identify specific interaction partners. He or she is expected to perform biological follow-up experiments using molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry techniques on novel and interesting findings derived from the acquired proteomics screens. To this purpose, the group’ laboratories are appropriately equipped.

Eligible Candidates

• PhD or equivalent degree in natural or medical science.
• prior experience and profound knowledge in high resolution mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF, Ion Trap, LTQ Orbitrap XL or Velos)
• prior experience in biochemistry, cell culture, protein chemistry techniques, rodent tissue and stem cells
• good knowledge in genetics and biology, cell signalling or analytical chemistry
• excellent communicational skills, both oral and written
• enthusiasm, motivation, flexibility and confidence

How to Apply

For additional questions concerning the project you can contact Prof. Dr. Hortense Slevogt (hortense.slevogt@charite.de), for questions concerning the application procedure contact the SEPTOMICS coordination office (Dr. Janina Hahn, septomics@hki-jena.de, 0049-3641-532-1374).

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter describing their research accomplishments and career goals as well as CV, copies of certificates, publication list and contact information for three references. Complete applications should be submitted before December 17, 2010 referring to Reg.- No. DM 64/2010.
