Overview
Research in media and communication studies at Lund University focuses on the sociology of media and culture. We combine quantitative and qualitative research methods with critical social and cultural theory to understand the role of media within broader social, political, and cultural contexts. Our international research includes work on media citizenship and democracy, gender and the media, media scandals, media audiences, popular culture, news, documentary, and reality TV, media health, consumption and advertising, social participation in new media environments, and the sociality and spatiality of media in urban spaces. Our doctoral students work on areas related to social activism, celebrities, media health, and cultural sociology. We run a regular international seminar series, and are developing doctoral courses and forums with other media institutions. We invite applicants with interests in media audiences and popular culture who can make an active contribution to the international profile of the department.
Job assignments
The main tasks for the doctoral position will be to conduct research on areas related to media audiences and popular culture, including entertainment formats. Applicants should have experience of qualitative and/or quantitative research methods. This position also includes twenty per cent teaching of undergraduate students in areas such as audiences, citizenship, and popular culture and administration related to research seminars, conferences and forums. The successful candidate will be supervised by the Chair in Media Professor Annette Hill. Languages include English and Swedish, with the expectation the written thesis will be in English.
Eligibility/Entry Requirements
To be eiligble for third cycle studies the applicant must either: 1. Have been awarded a second cycle degree, or equivalent international degree in media, communication and cultural studies, sociology, or another relevant subject area, 2. Have completed studies the equivalent of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at the second cycle level, 3. Have acquired basically the same qualifications in some other way in Sweden or abroad. The applicant must also have experience in audience research methods and theories.
In addition to the general requirements for the graduate program, that student should have 30 credits in their main field of media and communication studies at the advanced level, or equivalent knowledge acquiered within or outside the country. The student must also have completed an independent project of 15 credits at advanced level in the main field Media and communication.
Students that met the requirements for basic eligibility for third cycle studies before 1 July 2007, shall also be considered eligible for third cycle studies after the new regulations came into force, but only until the end of June 2015 in accordance with the following paragraph: The requirements for basic eligibility for third cycle studies are met by those who have completed first cycle education corresponding to at a minimum 180 higher education credits or acquired basically the qualifications in some ether way in Sweden or abroad. We are looking for a candidate with experience in audience research methods and theories.
Basis of Assessment
In accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, paragraph 5, particular emphasis for admission shall be placed upon the applicant’s ability to successfully complete PhD studies, as indicated by academic qualifications and merits.In the assessment procedure emphasis will be placed on research interests and skills in the following order: undergraduate and postgraduate qualification in media, communication and cultural studies, sociology, or relevant area; research interests in media audiences and popular culture, including entertainment formats; English language proficiency at an advanced level, administrative skills.
