Overview
Massey University received a generous endowment from the Nippon Foundation (previously the Sasakawa Foundation of Tokyo) to fund the Sasakawa Fellowship Fund for Japanese Language Education.
Purpose of award
The Fund supports scholarships for postgraduate students whose research will benefit Japanese language learning in New Zealand.
Selection criteria
Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or hold New Zealand permanent resident status. At the time of application, candidates must be enrolled at the tertiary institution where they will be taking up their scholarship.
Strong preference will be given to candidates who are enrolled at a New Zealand tertiary institution.
Part-time candidates will not be excluded but details of employment status (if relevant) should be provided.
There shall be three categories of scholarships as follows:
A. PhD scholarship: One scholarship of up to $30,000 (maximum of $10,000 in one year) may be awarded to a PhD student who is researching an area of relevance to Japanese language learning in New Zealand.
B. Masters scholarship: Every year up to two scholarships of $5,000 each may be awarded to Masters students who are researching an area of relevance to Japanese language learning in New Zealand.
C. Honours scholarship: $1,000 may be awarded to Honours students who are researching an area of relevance to Japanese language learning in New Zealand.

How do students apply?
Candidates shall enter for the scholarship on an application form available from the Universities New Zealand-Te Pokai Tara website: www.universitiesnz.ac.nz
All candidates shall forward their applications to reach the Scholarships Office at the university at which they are enrolled no later than 31 March.
The applications should be accompanied by:
(a) Universities New Zealand-Te Pokai Tara Privacy Form;
(b) A statement (approximately 500 words) detailing the candidate’s proposed research including an outline of the proposed methods of investigation. Attach a list of publications, if applicable;
(c) A statement (approximately 500 words) explaining the relevance of the proposed research to the purpose of the scholarship i.e. how might the research benefit the field of Japanese language learning in New Zealand?
(e) A short statement (no more than 100 words) outlining the candidate’s proposed future (or current) occupation.
(f) A certified copy of birth certificate or other evidence of citizenship or resident status.
(g) A certified copy of the candidate’s academic record.
(h) Certified copies of other awards and achievements.
(i) Any other evidence the candidate judges relevant to the application.
Referees
Candidates should invite two referees to complete the confidential referee’s report form attached to the application form and ask the referees to send the completed forms to the designated office by 31 March. As well as testifying to the candidate’s qualifications and ability to carry out the proposed research, it is important that the referees include comment on the relevance of the candidate’s research to Japanese language learning in New Zealand. Both should be academic referees, and at least one must be the candidate’s current supervisor. If the candidate feels that neither of the referees is able to comment on the relevance to Japanese language education/studies, a third reference may be included.
Decision makers
The Selection Committee shall comprise representatives from the Management Committee of the Sasakawa Fellowship Fund.
In considering the award the Selection Committee shall take into account:
(a) the practical relevance of the proposed study to Japanese language learning;
(b) support for the research project: this could include internal university support including supervision and collaboration;
(c) the ability and experience of the candidate in the chosen field;
(d) the academic record of the candidate.
These criteria will be used to select a short-list of candidates who may then be asked for further information before a decision is made. Short-listed applicants for the PhD scholarship may be called for interview. The Selection Committee reserves the right to enter into correspondence with referees before finalising selection.
How and when do students learn of the decision?
Category B & C awards will be paid in two instalments: the first soon after notification of success, the second on receipt of evidence that the programme has been successfully completed. The Category A (PhD) award will be paid in instalments of $5,000, the first soon after notification of success of the application then subsequently at six monthly intervals on receipt of notification of satisfactory progress from the chief supervisor. Part-time candidates may prefer to negotiate to spread the payments.
Decisions made: May/June.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The Universities New Zealand-Te Pokai Tara and the Sasakawa Fellowship Fund for Japanese Language Education reserve the right to use the names, photographs and details of successful applicants for advertising and publicity. If requested by the Fund or by Universities New Zealand-Te Pokai Tara, recipients agree to participate in any promotional activity including interviews and presenting on their field of study to selected groups.
Suspension or Termination
The Universities New Zealand-Te Pokai Tara or the Sasakawa Fellowship Fund for Japanese Language Education may at any time suspend or terminate the scholarship if it is satisfied that the holder is not diligently pursuing the research project or has failed to comply with any conditions relating to the tenure of the scholarship.

Prospective candidates could use this list to stimulate ideas for their own research. Some of the topics on the list will be more relevant than others depending on the candidates’ category of enrolment.
