Overview
In order to contribute to the advancement of professional knowledge in international peace and security, the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) and the European Institute of the University of Geneva (IEUG) is offering a European Scholarship for Central Asia to a candidate who has recently graduated from the OSCE Academy in Bishkek with a university degree, and who has demonstrated excellence in both his/her academic abilities and leadership potential.
The programme is designed to prepare participants for leadership roles in government as well as international and non-governmental organisations. It provides expert training in international security policy through a balance of knowledge transfer and skills development. Participants who successfully complete the programme will be awarded the ITC Certificate and the degree of Master of Advanced Studies in International and European Security (60 ECTS).
This European Scholarship for Central Asia requires enrolment in two concurrent components from October 2011 to June 2012: the 26th International Training Course in Security Policy (ITC 26), conducted by the GCSP the 6th Master of Advanced Studies in International and European Security (MAS), conducted jointly by the GCSP and the European Institute of the University of Geneva (IEUG).
Eligibility:
This scholarship is open to recent graduates from the OSCE Academy in Bishkek, aged 23 or above or candidates who will have graduated by the time the scholarship comes into effect and who are citizens of one of the five Central Asian states: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan or Uzbekistan. Candidates should possess a university degree and at least two years of professional experience, ideally in a security policy-related field. Candidates must also have a very good knowledge of English, the working language of the Course.
Application Procedure:
Candidates are kindly asked to send a letter of motivation accompanied by an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae, a copy of relevant university degree(s) as well as two letters of recommendation. Finally, candidates must provide a writing sample of 1500 words on “The role of different actors in the democratic transformation of autocratic governments”. The actors included may be the state, neighboring countries, extra-regional powers, international institutions and civil society. Also, while case studies can be used for illustration purposes, they must not constitute the entire paper.
The Selection Process:
After an initial review of all applications, telephone and/or on-site interviews will be carried out with short-listed candidates in April. The applicants will be informed of the selection within a few weeks.
Award:
The chosen candidate will be awarded the European Scholarship for Central Asia 2011-2012. This scholarship will cover the tuition fees, a return flight to/from Geneva, accommodation and living expenses in Geneva, for the duration of the MAS. The scholarship may also include participation in the annual GCSP sponsored conference on Central Asia in Bishkek, as well as the potential publication of the MAS thesis.
