Overview
With a history dating back to 1821, Heriot-Watt University has established a reputation for world-class teaching and practical, leading-edge research, which has made us one of the top UK universities for business and industry.
We are now inviting applications for full-time PhD scholarships in the areas listed below.
Accountancy, Economics and Finance
The Accountancy Research Group encompasses accountancy practice which is a complex, yet necessary part of financial reporting for business and government. Within Economics the Centre for Economic Reform & Transformation (CERT) is the leading centre for the study of economic transition from emerging economies to market economies. A second main strand of work, Energy economics, is particularly relevant in today’s business arena: developing solutions to diverse problems to help face the challenges of climate change. Finance research is undertaken in conjunction with the Centre for Finance & Investment (CFI) that brings together academic and industry expertise in the area of finance and investment. We welcome applications from all areas of study but particularly in the areas of Energy and Financial Markets.
Business Management
Applications are welcome from individuals with interests that are compatible with the four Research Centres and Groupings within the Department of Business and Management. The Centre for Research on Work and Wellbeing (CRoWW), Creativity, Enterprise and Sustainability Group (CREST), Logistics Research Centre (LRC) and the George Davies Centre for Retail Excellence (GDCRE). These centres incorporate a range of research interests including Consumer Behaviour, Human Resource Management, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Organisational Behaviour/Identity, Strategy and Supply Chain Management, particularly the Fashion sector.
Languages and Intercultural Studies
The aims of the Centre for Translation and Interpreting Studies in Scotland (CTISS) include the investigation of the processes and practices of translating and interpreting and the dissemination of research. The Studies in European and International Culture and Societies (SEICS) Group contributes to the study of societies, cultures, politics, languages and identities through a combination of disciplines, including literary, cultural, film and media studies, history, political science and sociolinguistics. We welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates in all relevant areas of study, but particularly in the areas of: Language use in the corporate and public sectors; New technologies in translation research, practice and consumption; Developing identities: the role of history, culture and translation; Communication, justice and security.
