International Fellowship in Graduate Research for Adapting Livestock Systems to Climate Change

Overview

The International Fellowship in Graduate Research for Adapting Livestock Systems to Climate Change is intended to provide opportunities for graduate education that prepare students for interdisciplinary careers within the vision and objectives of the Livestock Climate-Change CRSP.

Fellows will be expected to become specialists who can contribute to research regarding the adaptation of livestock systems to climate change in the LCC CRSP countries of focus (Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Senegal, Nepal, and Tajikistan). Selected fellows must propose to conduct research in one or more of the focus countries. In this way, the LCC CRSP aims to build research capacity.

The Fellowship program provides a maximum of two years of support for M.S. study and three years of support for a Ph.D. program, with annual renewal based on a positive review of progress, continued applicability to the Livestock-Climate Change CRSP research goals, continued funding availability, and a high level of academic performance.

Awards will be given to both M.S. and Ph.D. students through their host institutions, pending available funds, with the majority for M.S. students studying in their home country or region. Ph.D. awards may also be given for study in the home country, region, or in the U.S. Selected fellows must be students from Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Senegal, Nepal, or Tajikistan in order to build capacity in these countries.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.Why can’t applicants be from or work in other countries? The LCC CRSP has selected these focus countries in order to target our limited resources and more effectively build capacity and knowledge in those places.

2.Why doesn’t the Fellowship cover stipend for Ph.D. students studying at a U.S. university? The fellowship will provide up to $20,000 per year to cover tuition/fees and to support research for Ph.D students. Students, in cooperation with their major professor, are expected to find other support to cover additional costs associated with completion of the degree.

3.Why is the award limited to $20,000/year of support for Ph.D. students? The fellowship will provide up to $20,000 per year for Ph.D. students to cover tuition/fees and to support research. Students, in cooperation with their major professor, are expected to find other support to cover additional costs associated with completion of the degree.

4.What type of cost-share is required? The host institution is expected to provide matching funds of at least 25% of the total requested amount to cover additional costs associated with the completion of the academic degree. Cost sharing will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and will take into account the capabilities of the cost-sharers. The LCC CRSP may count in-kind contributions toward cost sharing when they are assigned a reasonable monetary value.

5.What if the student not yet accepted/registered at the intended university? Official proof of acceptance/registration at the intended university is not required; however, applicants must include a letter of financial commitment for the support of the graduate program from their intended graduate advisor. Students must be accepted/registered at the intended university by the time the award is made.

6.Does the student have to be registered at Colorado State University in order to apply? No. It is not necessary to apply and/or be accepted to Colorado State University to be eligible for this fellowship. For MSc applicants, the intended university must be in one of the LCC CRSP focus countries; funding will not be provided for study in the U.S. For Ph.D. student applicants, the degree may be from any U.S. university or a university in one of the LCC CRSP focus countries.
