G.C. Henderson Research Scholarship at the University of Sydney

Overview

This scholarship is funded by a bequest from Professor G C Henderson to promote and encourage research into the history of the Polynesian, Melanesian and Micronesian communities. This scholarship is open to full-time postgraduate research candidates intending to enrol in the Departments of Anthropology, Archaeology or History at the University of Sydney. The tenure and benefits of the scholarship are similar to that of the UPA (valued at $22,860pa in 2011).

Application Procedures

• Applicants who have applied for the 2011 Semester two Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) and University of Sydney Postgraduate Awards (UPA) by 10 June 2011:
You will need to:

1. Submit a letter stating that you have submitted an application for the 2011 Semester two APA/UPA and wish to be considered for the Henderson Research Scholarship, together with an outline (maximum 2 pages) of your proposed research project in the history of Polynesian, Melanesian and Micronesian communities after discussing the details with your Supervisor or proposed Supervisor.
2. Provide the names and contact details of two academic referees who are familiar with your recent studies and able to comment on your research ability/potential and the relevance of your proposed research project to the purpose of the Henderson Research Scholarship. You must request them to send their report directly to the Scholarships Office by 18 July 2011.


• Applicants who have NOT applied (or are ineligible to apply) for the 2011 Semester two Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) and University of Sydney Postgraduate Awards (UPA):

You will need to submit an application which should comprise of:

1. An outline (maximum 2 pages) of your proposed research project in the history of Polynesian, Melanesian and Micronesian communities after discussing the details with your Supervisor or proposed Supervisor.
2. Certified copy of your passport or citizenship certificate and if applicable, relevant documentation concerning your permanent resident status in Australia (not required if you are/were a University of Sydney student).
3. Original or certified copy of your academic transcripts of your undergraduate and any postgraduate studies (University of Sydney transcripts need not be included) with actual marks where these are available.
4. A summary of your research experience (e.g. Honours project or research thesis with information on the title and length of the thesis/report completed).
5. If applicable, evidence of any scholarly publications and/or relevant professional experience in accordance with the criteria and instructions detailed in Section 6.3 ‘Research Potential Indicator (RPI)’ of the APA/UPA Information for 2011 Semester two Applicants document (available from:

You must also apply separately for admission as a postgraduate research candidate by the closing date determined by the appropriate Faculty before submitting your Henderson Scholarship application. Please note that the Faculty has to determine whether your candidature will be accepted before supporting your scholarship application.

by 18 July 2011. Late, faxed or e-mailed applications will not be accepted. Do not staple or bind your application form and supporting documents – use one paper clip or foldback clip only for each set of application.

Please ensure that your Academic Referee’s Reports reach the Scholarships Office by the same date. The Scholarships Office will not contact Academic Referees on behalf of applicants.

Applications for the G.C. Henderson Research Scholarship will be considered after the 2011 Semester two APA and UPA have been decided by the University. All applicants will be advised in early August 2011.
