PhD research fellowship in Tele-economics

A PhD research fellowship is offered within the area of Tele-economics at the Department of Telematics at the Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering (IME), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The department has approximately 50 PhD students and is currently involved in a national centre of Excellence (Q2S, www.q2s.ntnu.no), National research programs, EU Network of Excellences and EU research projects.

The research focus of this PhD position is on ICT service markets modeling. The increased use of ICT and ICT services has lead to a more complex market structure, with a number of actors providing value to ICT services by using a variety of business models, many of which are based on positive network externalities, extreme (exponential) growth, and aiming at market monopoly. In this context there is a need to better understand how ICT services influence the dynamics of the marketplace, the versatility and lifetime of products, pricing of services and networks, impact of network economics and social groups, and valuation of assets. Examples of topics that should be studied include:

• Mathematical models for markets with and without feedback.
• Advanced models for telecommunications markets, including the dynamics of oligopolies, development of monopolies in oligopolisitc markets, evolution of trends, effects of lock-in, impact of regulation, churning (time-based and stochastic),
• Simulations of telecommunications markets using discrete-event simulations and market agents.

We seek a highly motivated individual holding a Master’s degree in Telematics, Computer Science or other relevant disciplines, preferably with strong background in economics. Candidates with experience in mathematical modelling and simulations will be favoured. The candidate must fulfill the formal requirements to be accepted as a PhD candidate at NTNU. PhD Research grants at NTNU are normally for 4 years where the candidates are expected to use 25 % of their time on teaching or research assistance duties.

NTNUs PhD-rules require a master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best). Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree:

1. Curriculum vitae with information about the candidate’s prior training, exams, and work experience.
2. 3. Publications and any other work that the applicant wishes to be taken into account should be enclosed. Please list the submitted publications in the application. Joint works should clearly indicate the applicant’s contributions.
4. Foreign applicants must document an English language test TOEFL score of 600 or higher.

The PhD fellowships are placed in salary code 1017, salary level 48 - 61 in the national salary scheme, gross NOK 391 100 – 489 900 per annum, of which 2 % is deducted for the State Pension scheme. Starting salary is expected to be at level 48. The salary might be adjusted after negotiations with the employer to reflect the applicant’s experience.

The appointment will be made in accordance with current regulations with supplementary rules for research fellowship appointments in universities and polytechnics. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment. The successful applicant must agree to the conditions laid down for public employees. A contract will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment and work-related duties for award holders.
