William Chick Doctoral Scholarship In Architecture

Overview

The William Chick Doctoral Scholarship in Architecture was established in 2002 from the William Chick Scholarship Trust to assist students undertaking a course of study for a professional qualification in the practice of Architecture to undertake postgraduate study. William Chick desired to give students an opportunity to broaden their studies in New Zealand and overseas and be able to bring the knowledge and experience into their practice of architecture in New Zealand.

To assist students undertaking a course of study for a professional qualification in the practice of Architecture to undertake postgraduate study at either The University of Auckland School of Architecture or an approved institution overseas.


Selection process:
  • Available to students enrolled full time at The University of Auckland School of Architecture or at an approved institution overseas and who have paid the fees or have arranged to pay the fees, for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Applicants will be expected to have a first-class academic record.
  • The Scholarship is tenable by students who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand, who meet the requirements for entry into Doctoral programmes and who are graduates of a professional qualification in architecture from a New Zealand institution situated north of Huntly.
  • The basis of selection shall be academic merit. This will be measured on the quality of the research proposal, grade point average and/or Master's thesis.

How do students apply?Applications for the Scholarship must be made on the application form available from the Scholarships Office of The University of Auckland. The completed application form is to be submitted to the Scholarships Office no later than the closing date listed.

Decision makers

The Scholarship shall be awarded by the University of Auckland Council on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Property, Planning and Fine Arts, as advised by a selection committee consisting of the Head of the School of Architecture, the Postgraduate co-ordinator of the School of Architecture and a Trustee of the estate, or their nominees.


How and when do students learn of the decision?
The scholarship shall be paid as a stipend.


What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The amount of additional and paid University work a Scholar may undertake shall not exceed a total of 500 hours in a calendar year. The Scholarship may be terminated by The University of Auckland Council should it receive a report from the Head of the School of Architecture that progress of the Scholar is unsatisfactory.


Additional Information
  • The William Chick Doctoral Scholarship in Architecture may not be held concurrently with any postgraduate scholarship unless The University of Auckland Council so approves.
  • The University of Auckland Council shall not be bound to award the Scholarship for any year if in that year there is no suitable candidate for the award.
  • The University of Auckland Council shall have power to amend these regulations provided there is no departure from the main purpose of the Scholarship.

  • Additional funds are available as a one-off payment to support travel overseas and equipment on the recommendation of the supervisor and selection committee.
