Canada: Graduate Global Leadership Fellowship for Developing Countries

Overview

The Graduate Global Leadership Fellowships enable promising leaders from developing countries to pursue doctoral studies at UBC. The fellowships are to support international students showing outstanding leadership in humanitarian and development work in their home country. Graduate Global Leadership Fellowships thus open the way to a world-class graduate education for emerging scholars from countries with developing educational systems.

Fellows would be supported to pursue research and study that would enhance and support contributions already made and which would be of particular use when they return home to apply their new gained skills and/or knowledge. Recipients would be individuals with an appropriate academic background and who have an established records of contribution to the development of a civil and sustainable society in their home country through professional, academic or volunteer work.

Two new fellowships will be offered each year.

 $16,000 per year plus tuition for four years

Eligibility

Applicants must:
  • Hold a student visa at the beginning of the fellowship funding period
  • Be a citizen of a developing country (see list of eligible countries)
  • Have shown outstanding leadership in humanitarian and development work in their home country
  • Be starting a PhD or DMA program at UBC in May 2011, Sep 2011, or Jan 2012
  • Be starting their first doctoral degree

Evaluation Criteria

Academic Excellence (30%) - As demonstrated by academic transcripts, awards and distinctions
Research Ability / Potential (30%) - Quality of analytical skills, ability to think critically, ability to apply skills and knowledge, judgment, originality, initiative and autonomy, determination, and ability to complete projects within an appropriate period of time—as demonstrated in the description of the degree program and by work experience, research contributions, letters of appraisal
Leadership in development of civil and sustainable society in home country (40%) - Established record of leadership in professional, academic or volunteer work – as demonstrated in personal statement; work experience, community involvement and other extracurricular activities; communication skills; and letters of appraisal

Procedures

Application Procedures: 
Students complete application form and request supporting documents (transcripts, letters of reference - see application form for details). Students submit their application package to their UBC graduate program. Students are advised to verify their graduate program’s deadline well in advance.
Nomination Procedures: 
Of the applications received from its students, each UBC graduate program may submit a maximum of one nomination to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Together with their student’s application materials, graduate programs must submit a letter of support (maximum two pages each) which outlines the program’s nomination process and highlights any other relevant information in support of the nomination.
Application packages must be received by the Faculty of Graduate Studies by 4:00pm on Friday, January 27, 2012. Incomplete nominations will not be considered.
Adjudication Procedures: 
Applications will be reviewed and ranked by a sub-committee of faculty members from the Graduate Scholarships Committee.
