Overview
The Graduate School of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen is inviting applications for 15 PhD scholarships all starting 1 September 2010 for a period of up to three years. Applications must relate to one of the nine research topics.
1) Pedagogical and/or Technical Audiology The research topic “Pedagogical and/or Technical Audiology” is a part of the Department of Scandinavian Studies and Linguistics’ strategic research initiative in audiology. Project proposals should address the perception and/or production of language under various non-optimal auditory conditions, and may focus on one or more of the following topics:
•Identification of voices
•The consequences of cochlear implants for language acquisition
•Linguistic interaction in hearing impaired speakers

2) Media, Citizenship and Rhetoric The research topic “Media, Citizenship and Rhetoric” is part of the Department of Media, Cognition and Communication’s strategic research initiative regarding cultural mediatization and rhetorical citizenship. Applicants’ projects must focus on at least one of the themes below:
•Rhetorical aspects of public discourse in one or more media
•Connections between media specific production and organizational conditions and types of communicative interaction
•Various media genres’ potential for furthering democratic citizenship

3) Power, Knowledge and Politics in Europe and the European Cultural Area, i.e. in Europe’s Border Regions and Former European Colonies The research topic delineated by the title is part of the Saxo Institute’s strategic research initiative concerning political history from circa 2000 BC to the present. Project proposals should focus on one or more of the following topics:
•Political history
•Political cultures
•Power elites and other elite cultures
Preference will be given to project proposals within the subject areas of archaeology, ethnology, Greek and Latin, and history. Projects may cut across two or more of these areas. 4) Cultural Memory and the Construction of Individual Identities in the Modern World outside Western Europe and North America The research topic “Cultural Memory and the Construction of Individual Identities in the Modern World outside Western Europe and North America” is part of the Department of Cross Cultural and Regional Studies strategic research initiative on Cultural Heritage Understanding. Project proposals should focus on at least one or more of the following topics:
•Linguistic identities
•Religion
•Education and the national canon
Preference will be given to proposals that fall within or across the subject areas of religion, comparative cultural studies, minority studies, Middle Eastern studies, Asian studies, Eastern European studies, Arctic studies and Indian language and culture. 5) Transnational and Migration Studies “Transnational and Migration Studies” are part of a strategic research initiative at the Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies. Project proposals must focus on at least one of the following areas of study:

•Languages

•Literatures
•Historical periods
•Academic disciplines
Preference will be given to proposals that fall within or between English and American Studies, German and Dutch Studies, Romance and Latin American Studies, Postcolonial Studies and European Studies. 6) Cultural Memory: Aesthetics and Functions The research topic “Cultural Memory: Aesthetics and Functions” forms part of the strategic research initiatives of “Transmission, Historiography, Cultural Memory” and “Culture and Politics” at the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies. Project proposals must address at least one and preferably more of the following subjects:
•Artistic and cultural objects and processes involved in the production of cultural memory
•Media, forms and genres contributing to the production of images and ideas of the past
•Problems in cultural politics, media theory and history of identity in-volving concepts of cultural memory
Preference will be given to proposals that fall within or between Comparative Literature, Modern Culture, Art History, Musicology, Theatre and Performance, Visual Culture, and Dance. 7) Primary Sources for the Study of the Scandinavian Languages The research topic “Primary Sources for the Study of the Scandinavian Languages” is part of a strategic research initiative focusing on modern methods in the analysis of primary sources pertaining to the study of the Scandinavian languages, contemporary as well as historical. The aim of the strategic research initiative is to further the study of the materials in the collections of the Department of Scandinavian Research, preferably as relates to existing projects. Project proposals must focus on at least one of the following topics:
•Lexicography
•Spoken Danish
•Scholarly editing

8) Language Technology The research topic “Language Technology” is part of the strategic research initiatives of the Centre for Language Technology focusing on methods and tools for creation, annotation and exploitation of language resources, in particular for Danish, but also for other languages. The strategic research initiatives also encompass the field of cognitive science (multimodal corpora and systems) and ontologies of knowledge systems including their contribution to intelligent search algorithms. The multilinguality research area focuses on e.g. machine translation (SMT or RBMT or combinations) and methods for searching multilingual websites. Research proposals must focus on at least one of the following topics:
•Language resources and tools (research infrastructure)
•Cognitive science
•Knowledge systems
•Tools for multilinguality

9) The Human Factor in Climate Change The research topic “The Human Factor in Climate Change” focusing on climate change and its implications on human life is one of the strategic research initiatives of the Faculty of Humanities. Research proposals for this topic are welcome from all fields of the humanities e.g.
•Historical or archaeological perspectives on the impact of earlier climate changes on culture and lifestyle
•The impact of climate change on lifestyle and cultural barriers or on ethical, religious and philosophical questions
•Problems caused by climate change, e.g. migration and social conflict and how these are represented in literature, media and art
Successful applicants will be affiliated to the research group “Research on Climate Change within the Humanities” and affiliated to an appropriate de-partment. Application procedure Applicants need to hold a two-year Master's degree (120 ECTS) or the equivalent, or expect to receive such by 31 August 2010. Applicants shall have submitted their thesis at the time of application, to the extent the thesis forms part of their Master's programme.
Applicants with a non-Danish Master’s degree will have their degree assessed by CIRIUS to establish, if their Master’s degree of the applicant is equivalent to a Danish Master’s degree. More information about CIRIUS is available at: http://www.studyindenmark.dk/
Employment as a PhD scholar occurs pursuant to the applicable rules of the Faculty of Humanities, as well as between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). Under this agreement, the PhD fellow is obliged – without further remuneration – to carry out allotted work to an extent corresponding to a total of 840 working hours in the case of a three-year contract.
