Italy: Competition for a 6 Months Fellowship for a Collaboration to Research Activities in the Field of Biological Sciences

Overview

According to the regulations in force, the University of Milan has launched a competition, based on education and scientific qualifications, for the award of a 6 months fellowship for a collaboration to research activities in the field of Biological Sciences. The competition is restricted to doctorate graduates having a scientific and professional curriculum vitae suitable to the research activities to be performed.

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

- citizenship from Latin American countries;
- absence of criminal record;
- university degree in Human Movement Science or Biology or Medicine from a university of Latin American countries


The equivalence of the degree will be evaluated by the Commission only for aims connected to the selection.

􀀹 In addition, a competence in the field of locomotion biomechanics, bioenergetics and electromyography (EMG)

􀀹 and a knowledge of the English and Italian languages are required
The award holder will be required to fulfil the activities reported below at the Department of Human Physiology of the University of Milan, under Prof. Alberto E. Minetti and supervision, within the research program named “The determinants of optimum walking speed: the relationship among the mechanical work, the metabolic expenditure and the electromyographic activity”.

The activities are as follows:

1. subject recruitment, experimental setup organization and calibration
2. EMG, metabolic and mechanical measurements on 16 postural and propulsive muscles of 10 subjects walking at 5 speeds and 7 gradients (-25%, -15%, -5%, 0%, +5%, +15%, +25%)
3. post-processing of the acquired data, with contribution to the managing software design
4. statistical analysis, research output generation, manuscript writing
The fellowship will be cofinanced by Fondazione Cariplo within University Project UniALA.

The fellowship does not represent dependent work relationship and does not give rights to enter University staff. Fellows can take part in examination commissions as experts in the subject and collaborate in tutoring activities and participate in seminars related to their research field, as far as such activities do not interfere with the accomplishing of their research activity.

The fellowship cannot be added to grants, other scholarship or any other form of subvention or other types of aid, except for those established for integration of stays abroad, neither with other contracts of collaboration nor with income coming from free lance activities performed with continuity. Extra-university activities as speaker in seminars, conferences or publishing activities and a limited activity of self-employed work are compatible with the fellowship, upon written communication and in agreement with the scientist-in-charge and upon the condition that such activity is declared compatible by the Structure where the fellow performs research

activity and does not imply interest conflicts with the research activity performed for the University. Self-employed work cannot exceed the income limits established by Consiglio di Amministrazione equal to a gross yearly amount of 15.000 Euros, with exclusion of remuneration coming from copyright.

The total gross amount of the fellowship is equal to Euro 9.372,00 for 6 months. Expenses for insurance against injuries and third party responsibility rest upon the University. The amount is not submitted to IRPEF according to L. n. 476 13/08/1984 art. 4 and is subject to regulations established by L. n. 335 08/08/1995 art. 2 commi 26 and following, as for what concerns social security.

For this period an amount will be paid to support living expenses equal to Euro 7.200,00.

The amount is paid monthly. The duties of the Fellows, established by the individual contract, are accomplished under the supervision of the Supervisor of the Project, who will verify the activity carried out.

The applications from candidates will be examined by a Commission, defined by the Rector, made up of three professors suggested by the Professor in charge, and it will form a ranking, by justified report, within thirty days since expiry date of the competition on the basis of an evaluation of academic and scientific qualifications. For academic and scientific qualifications the Commission can use up to 75 points.

The Commission will send to the Rector the result of the selection for conferring the fellowship. The Rector will send, by registered letter, to the winner the conferring of the fellowship.

Within 30 days since receiving the registered letter the winner must send the documents required in order to accept the fellowship and documents necessary to start the procedure for requiring permit of stay for self-employed work. After obtaining visa for entering Italy, there will be one month time before starting research activity in Italy upon agreement with the Scientist-in-charge. Anyway research activity must end within financing expiry date that is within 31.12.2010. The Fellows who do not submit to the Regulation loose the right to the Fellowship as from a Rector’s act preceded by a written note.

In case of loss of the fellowship or of renounce by the winners, the fellowship will be made available for the candidates in the ranking as from the Regulation.

Application forms must arrive – by registered post with reply coupon attached – at the University of Milan (Università degli Studi di Milano, via Festa del Perdono 7, 20122 Milano, Italy), by the deadline of 30 december 2009. Candidates must enclose the following documents with their application form, available at WEB SITE:

- Degree certificate with transcript of marks achieved;
- PhD certificate;
- evidence of any other qualification held, like diplomas, fellowships and grants, certificates of attendance to post-degree courses, scientific publications;
- scientific and professional curriculum vitae.
- at least two letters of presentation by Professors of University of origin of the candidate or of other Universities supporting the proposal

The assessment of qualifications will take place on January 14th 2010, by the Department of Human Physiology, Via Mangiagalli 32, 20133 Milano.

According to D.L. 196/03 University will commit itself to respect all confidential information provided by the candidate: “all information provided will be handled only for aims connected to the selection and to the stipulation and management of relationship with University”.
