New Zealand: Massey University Doctoral Scholarship 2010

Overview

Doctoral Scholarships are offered for the purpose of encouraging postgraduate research at Massey University and are awarded on academic ranking.

Up to ten Vice-Chancellor's Doctoral Scholarships are offered each year. Priority will be given to domestic students.

Up to thirty Doctoral Scholarships are offered each year to applicants with a high Honours degree.
The awarding of any Doctoral Scholarship is discretionary and is dependent upon funding.

Eligibility

The Doctoral Scholarships are open to persons who are enrolled or eligible to enrol full-time for a research paper of 120 credits during a 12 month period towards a Doctoral degree at Massey University. A full-time candidate will be expected to work 40 - 50 hours per week on their Doctoral qualification. Part-time applicants are not eligible. Applicants already holding a PhD are not eligible to apply. Consideration will normally only be given to students with a GPA of 7.0 or better (on a 9 point scale), or an A- average or better in graduate level papers. Applicants who are completing Honours or Masters thesis or research report must be due to submit by the end of the year (for October applications).

Please Note: All applicants for the Massey University Doctoral Scholarships are considered for the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships. The Vice Chancellor's Scholarships are awarded on academic ranking to the top students.

The applicant is required to pay for the course by course evaluation, with the applicant and Massey University each receiving a copy of the resulting evaluation report. For students with overseas qualifications who are awarded a Doctoral Scholarship, a one off payment of up to $NZ250.00 will be made towards reimbursement of the cost of the evaluation report. Successful applicants will need to provide proof of payment (i.e. a receipt), in order for reimbursement to be made with the first monthly stipend.
(Note: A qualifications assessment report from New Zealand Qualifications Authority is not a substitute for the course by course evaluation).

Value of This Scholarship

1. Doctoral Scholarships
The value of the Doctoral Scholarship shall be $22,000 per annum to a maximum of 3 years. Recipients are responsible for the payment of their fees.

2. Vice Chancellor's Doctoral Scholarship
The value of the Vice Chancellor's Doctoral Scholarship shall be $27,000 per annum to a maximum of 3 years. Recipients are responsible for the payment of their fees.

The Scholarships Committee may reduce the value or amend the terms and conditions of a Doctoral Scholarship to meet the circumstances of individual applicants

Term

Every Doctoral Scholarship shall be tenable at Massey University for up to a maximum period of 36 months devoted to full-time research. No tenure beyond 36 months will be permitted. No retrospective payments will be permitted unless approval into the Doctoral programme was delayed for reasons beyond the applicant's control.

Tenure

The tenure of the Doctoral Scholarships shall commence by either 1 June (October round) or by 1 December (July round). No deferrals beyond these dates are permitted, except, in exceptional circumstances, with the express written approval from the Dean of the Graduate Research School.

Applicants apply for the Doctoral Scholarship on the application form available from Massey Contact, at each campus, or e-mail: Contact@massey.ac.nz, or can be downloaded from the click box at the bottom of this page. Applications must be received by the Scholarships Office, Graduate Research School by:

1 July: to commence programme of research before 1 December of the current year.
1 October: to commence programme of research before 1 June in the year following that of application.

International Applicants International applicants must apply for admission to Massey University on a separate application form available from International Office, Private Bag 11-222, Palmerston North, New Zealand. Email:

PLEASE NOTE: Scholarship applications cannot be accepted until such time as the international applicant has applied for admission and has been given a Massey University student ID. All successful applicants must also apply for provisional registration through the Doctoral Research Committee before Doctoral Scholarship payments commence, email: Doctoral.Office@massey.ac.nz

All successful international students will be required to return a signed acceptance of the Offer of Place and pay the total fees due before the International Office can confirm supervision with the College and issue a confirmed offer of place.
