New Zealand: The Prime Minister’s Science Teacher Prize

Overview

The Prime Minister's Science Teacher Prize will be given in recognition of an outstanding teacher of Science. The Prize is worth $150,000 with the recipient receiving $50,000 and the recipient’s school receiving $100,000.

Eligibility

All Nominees must meet the following requirements:

They need to be qualified and registered teachers currently employed in a permanent capacity in a New Zealand school by a Board of Trustees

They should have been teaching Science in the same school for at least 12 months prior to nomination. For the 2009 Prize this will mean that Nominees will have had to have taught continuously in the same school for the 2009 school year

In the case of secondary school teachers, the majority of teaching time must have been devoted to teaching Science

They must be either a New Zealand citizen or a New Zealand permanent resident

The recipient of the Prize will be expected to remain in the teaching profession for at least the year following the presentation of the Prize.


Criteria

Nominees need to demonstrate:

That their actions have led to improved outcomes in Science for their students

How they have influenced the school's delivery of, and engagement with Science, including supporting their colleagues

That they have been an active participant in the local teaching and learning community and/or the national education community

How they have contributed to the awareness and appreciation of science by the wider community.


Entry Process

All entries must be completed and received by Friday 18th December 2009.

Self-nomination is not accepted.

Each Nomination requires the following:

1 Nominator - person who submits the Nominee's name
1 Nominee - teacher being nominated for the Prize
1 Supporter - person to endorse the nomination
Nominee's Current Principal - to complete a confidential statement. (the Principal cannot be a Nominator or Supporter)

Nominator

The Nominator must meet the following requirements:

have knowledge of the Nominee’s work
have the ability to comment on all of the criteria.
The Nominator will be required to:
complete an online form which addresses the selection criteria
submit a short CV online.

Once the nomination has been submitted the Nominee, Supporter and Principal will be emailed a link to complete their online forms.

Nominee

The Nominee will be required to:

-confirm an authorisaton form endorsing their nomination
-agree that any information provided in the nomination may be used in publicity for the Prize
-submit a short CV online.

Supporter

The Supporter must meet the following requirements:

-be knowledgeable about the Nominee
-be able to comment on the Nominee's achievements.

The Supporter will be required to:

-complete an online form addressing the Nominee's achievements
-submit a short CV online.

Principal

The Principal must be the the Nominee's current Principal and will be required to:
submit a confidential statement online regarding the Nominee

complete an online form including the provision of a plan outlining how the $100,000 Prize money would be utilized.
