UK: PhD Studentship – Hydrodynamics of Offshore Structures and Subsea Systems, Newcastle University

Overview

This is an excellent opportunity to join one of the UK's leading teams of researchers in marine technology.

We have one studentship available for a PhD project in one of the following themes:

• Coupled modelling of fluid-structure-soil interaction
• Dynamics of deepwater marine riser systems
• Viscous effects on hydrodynamics of deepwater offshore structures
• Development of solution methods for nonlinear offshore mechanics
• Coupled analysis of deepwater offshore structure and mooring systems

The successful applicant will work with Professor Longbin Tao in the marine technology group.

Value of the Award

The studentship provides a tax-free bursary of £15,000 per annum which covers tuition fees (at the UK/EU rate) and living costs.

Eligibility

Applicants of any nationality may apply, however since fees for international students are higher than those for UK/EU applicants, international students will need to source additional funding.

Requirement

You should have a minimum of an upper-second-class or first-class Honours degree in offshore engineering, naval architecture, civil engineering or applied mathematics. An MSc in science or engineering would be an advantage.

How to Apply

You must complete the University’s postgraduate application form, selecting ‘PhD School of Marine Sciences and Technology (full time) - Marine Technology (Engineering)’ as the programme of study and inserting the reference number MA006. Only mandatory fields need to be completed (no personal statement required) and a CV and a covering letter should be attached. The covering letter must state the title of the studentship, quote the reference number MA006 and state how your interests and experience relate to the project of your chosen theme.

Deadline for applications: 20th December 2009

Further InformationFor further details about the project, please contact Professor Longbin Tao by email: L.Tao@ncl.ac.uk.
