Morocco: 2011 Study of the United States Institute (SUSI) for Student Leaders on Social Entrepreneurship

Overview

The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Rabat, Morocco, is seeking candidates for the 2011 Study of the United States Institute (SUSI) for Student Leaders on Social Entrepreneurship. Undergraduate students from universities and other institutions of higher education, between 18 and 25 years of age, who demonstrate leadership through academic work, community involvement and extracurricular activities, have a strong interest in Social Entrepreneurship and have a good command of English, are invited to apply for the program. The program offers up to five (5) scholarships to the Moroccan undergraduate students. The application deadline is Tuesday, 21 December, 2010.

Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) for Student Leaders” are intensive academic programs whose purpose is to provide groups of undergraduate student leaders with a deeper understanding of the United States, while simultaneously enhancing their leadership skills. The Institute on Social Entrepreneurship will consist of a balanced series of seminar discussions, readings, group presentations, and lectures. Educational travel to other parts of the United States, local site visits, and volunteer opportunities will complement the coursework and classroom activities. The Institute will include an academic residency component of approximately four weeks and a domestic travel component of approximately one week that will conclude with a 2-3 day program in Washington, D.C.


The Study of the U.S. Institute on Social Entrepreneurship” will provide participants with an overview of how to

employ entrepreneurial skills to address social issues. The Institute will review the development, history, challenges, and successes of social enterprises and community leaders, in the United States and globally. Topics may include microfinance; organizational development and management; grant writing; innovation; emerging markets and risk analysis; strategic business planning; corporate social responsibility; and, women and minorities in entrepreneurship.

All participants’ costs, including program administration, international and domestic travel and ground transportation, book, cultural, mailing and incidental allowances, housing and subsistence will be paid by the U.S. Department of State.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS:

Competition will be based on the candidates’ interest in Social Entrepreneurship issues, the potential of the

candidates to become student leaders through academic performance, community involvement and extracurricular activities. While all candidates will have a strong interest in social entrepreneurship, their fields of study might vary, and can include disciplines such as Business, Economics, International Development, Management, Social Work, and Sociology.

The competition is open to all applicants who meet the following minimum criteria:

· have a strong interest in Social Entrepreneurship;
· be fluent in English;
· be between 18 and 25 years of age;
· have completed at least one semester of university and have at least one semester remaining in their university studies;
· be committed to returning home to complete their degree;
· demonstrate strong leadership qualities;
· indicate a serious interest in learning about the United States;
· have a sustained high level of academic achievement, as indicated by grades, awards, and teacher recommendations;
· demonstrate commitment to community and extracurricular university activities;
· have little or no prior study or travel experience in the United States or elsewhere outside of their home country;
· be mature, responsible, independent, confident, open-minded, tolerant, thoughtful, and inquisitive;
· be willing and able to fully participate in an intensive academic program, community service, and educational travel; and
· be comfortable with campus life, prepared to share living accommodations, and able to make adjustments to cultural and social practices different from those of their home country.
