PhD fellowship at the Centre for GeoGenetics, in the area of Geology

Overview

A 3-year PhD fellowship is available at the newly formed Centre for GeoGenetics, Natural History Museum of Denmark, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen, starting February 1st, 2011 or soon thereafter.

Project area:
The Centre of Excellence in GeoGenetics (funded by the Danish National Research Foundation) is a recently formed Basic Science Research Center at the Faculty of Science, headed by director, Professor Eske Willerslev (Natural History Museum of Denmark and Biological Institute), and including his research group and the groups of Professor Anders Krogh (Department of Biology) and Associate Professors Kurt H. Kjær, Tom Gilbert and Ludovic Orlando (Natural History Museum of Denmark). The scope of the Centre is to fuse ancient genetic, archaeological, paleontological and geological knowledge in order to expand the frontiers of these disciplines. The project area for the announced PhD studentship will be related to the ice marginal reconstructions using aerial photogrammetry with a focus on the Greenland Ice Sheet in order to understand the biological effect caused by ice sheet variability.

Qualifications:

The successful applicant must be an enthusiastic researcher and have a MSc (or equivalent) in geology, physical geography or geoinformatics. Preferred key skills and experiences should include geodetic methods for change detection of glacier ice and forelands with emphasis on photogrammetric means. Also, experience with the Socet Set/GXP, ArcGIS and ENVI/IDL software packages is a prerequisite. As the members and collaborators of the Centre are international, the working language of the Centre is English, thus excellent English speaking, reading and writing skills are required.

Applications will be evaluated by an assessment committee. The applicant will be notified of the composition of the committee. Each applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns her/him. The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant. In addition experience with some of the above mentioned methods would be an advantage.

Salary and terms of employment:

Terms of employment: We offer a full-time PhD position for three years with the specific intention that it results in a PhD at the end of these three years. The salary depends on seniority, as agreed between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations within the range of 23,000-30,000 DKK/month (approximately 3,100-4,000Euro/month).
