Overview
Text and Event in Early Modern Europe (TEEME) is an international doctoral programme in early modern studies funded by the European Union under the Erasmus Mundus scheme. It is structured around a unique collaboration between university-based researchers in the Humanities and the cultural and creative sector in four EU countries (United Kingdom, Germany, Portugal, Czech Republic). Combining the study of literature, history and culture, TEEME is designed to prepare a new generation of research leaders, cultural managers and policy-makers for the demands of a 21st century in which historical forgetfulness and cultural amnesia threaten the integration of an increasingly interconnected world.
AN EU EXCELLENCE PROGRAMME
The TEEME consortium combines four exceptionally strong research environments that represent centres of national and international excellence:
• University of Kent, United Kingdom
• Freie Universität Berlin, Germany
• Universidade da Porto, Portugal
• Univerzita Karlova v Praze (Prague), Czech Republic
Entry Requirements
1. Selection to the programme is based on high academic achievement, the fit of your research project with the TEEME expectations and an assessment of your potential and commitment to complete high-quality research.
2. You will normally be expected to hold a good or very good second-cycle degree (usually a Master’s) in any area of literature, history or cultural studies. Applicants from other Humanities or Social Science subjects will also be considered.
3. Non-native speakers of English must demonstrate proficiency in English at level C1 (‘proficient user’) as defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) through, for example, an IELTS certificate at level 7.0 or a score of 100 (including a minimum 22 in both writing and reading) in the internet-based TOEFL.
4. Students whose native language is English will be required to demonstrate competence in another EU language at CEFR level B2 (independent user).
Erasmus Mundus Fellowship
Most students are eligible to apply for a fully funded Erasmus Mundus Fellowship. For 2011, there are nine Fellowships available: six for overseas students and three for EU students. In addition, each of the four partner universities provide or administer targeted research grants as well as partially or fully funded studentships other than Erasmus Mundus. Full details of all funding opportunities and eligibility criteria are available at http://www.teemeurope.eu/
All Erasmus Mundus Fellowship holders on the TEEME programme will benefit from Fellowship contracts covering monthly allowance, holidays, parental leave, social security and pension rights. Health insurance will be provided free of charge by the consortium for all doctoral candidates on the programme.
Details of the Fellowship contracts, including the amount of the monthly allowance, will be available soon. Fellowship holders can expect a monthly net contribution towards their living expenses of c. 1400€. Please quote scholarization as your reference when applying for this fellowship.
Application Procedures
You are required to demonstrate your eligibility and academic achievement through the submission of relevant documentation, including:
• detailed transcripts with grades and degree classification
• a copy of your degree certificates
• a current CV (European format)
• a certificate of language ability
• a statement of purpose (maximum 500 words)
• a research proposal including justification of the proposed mobility pathway (maximum 1,500 words).
We are looking for research projects that are comparative and interdisciplinary in conception, that bear a clear relation to present needs and debates, and that span at least two different linguistic, religious and/or ethnic cultures within Europe, or that relate one European with one non-European culture, in the period 1400 to 1700, or in later political or cultural uses and representations of early modern literature and history.
• the names of two referees who will attest to your academic standing and potential.
Applications should be made via the TEEME website at
www.teemeurope.eu/applications/index-applications.html
The closing date for applications in the 2011 Fellowships round is 16 January 2011. It is expected that a call for non-Fellowship applications will be launched later in the year. Please check the website for details. The maximum number of students admitted to the programme in any one year is 16.
