Overview
The Office of Academic Exchange Programs in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) is soliciting applicants for a new short-term exchange opportunity for the summer of 2011 – The Undergraduate Intensive English Language Study Program (UIELSP).
A total of 120 students all over the world will be selected to participate in an immersion program of around eight-weeks on one of three U.S campuses in Summer 2011: Drexel University, Notre Dame, and Utah State University. Each campus has a slightly different program, but are aimed at English language acquisition, leadership skill building, and civic engagement. Programs also include leadership training and participants will be involved in volunteerism/community service projects that focus on relevant issues such as public health and/or environmental conservation and sustainability. Host institution staff will help participants develop an individualized action plan and develop a project that participants will be able to implement upon their return home, keeping in mind the specific needs of participants’ home communities. Throughout the program participants will attend a number of cultural events and excursions and have opportunities to interact with American citizens
U.S. Program Dates:
1.Program 1: June 6 – August 1, 2011
2.Program 2: June 11 – August 6, 2011
3.Program 3: June 21 – August 20, 2011
Goals for Participants:
1.Intensive English language instruction with an emphasis on English for Academic Purposes
2.Community and campus connections with U.S. students and area residents
3.Excursions designed to complement the academic program and expand the participants’ understanding of American culture, values, and history
4.Development of home country service project
Criteria for Nominees:
1.Citizens of Turkmenistan
2.Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program
3.English language ability (approximately in the 420-480 TOEFL range
Deadline to submit applications: January 7, 2011
