Erasmus Mundus (euSYSBIO) Scholarships for International Students

Overview

The Erasmus Mundus master's programme in Systems Biology (euSYSBIO) is a cooperation between KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (KTH), Instituto Superior Tecnologico in Portugal (IST) and Aalto University school of Science and Technology in Finland. It is a two-year Master's programme including compulsory mobilty for the students. Students enter at KTH or Aalto University and continue in the second year at one of the other two institutions.

The aim of euSYSBIO programme is to train professionals who can cope with the expected future demands of a systems biology specialist. Due to the rapid progress within the field, learning to use the current tools and methods for handling data in bioinformatics applications is not yet enough. New measurement techniques are being developed, giving rise to new forms of data (the current new technique is high-throughput sequencing), with ever-increasing quantities. The euSYSBIO programme gives the students a solid back-ground in methodological sciences and hands-on experience in measurement modern measurement technologies, thus providing the students the means for handling large quantities of data and using the information to make valid biological hypotheses, and then to test them.

The euSYSBIO programme offers education of high international standard as well as cultural experience from two different European countries and a double degree from two universities. Students receive double degrees, i.e. a degree from the institution where they are enrolled the first year, and a degree from the institution where they are enrolled the second year. Students from any country are welcome to apply. A number of Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available.


The partner universities

The programme is offered by a consortium consisting of three universities:

KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden (coordinator)
Higher Technical Institute (IST), Portugal
Aalto University school of Science and Technology, Finland

Admission requirements for euSYSBIO

To qualify for the euSYSBIO programme applicants need to fulfill the admission requirements based on previous studies, English proficiency and documentation. Please note that the admission requirements can vary for each Erasmus Mundus Master’s Programme.

1. Previous studies: A completed Bachelor's degree

Applicants must have completed a Bachelor’s degree encompassing a minimum of 180 ECTS credits or equivalent academic qualifications from an internationally recognized university and have taken the following subjects: multivariate calculus, linear algebra and computer science including programming.

Conditional acceptance
Students in their final year of undergraduate education may also apply and if qualified, receive a conditional offer. If you have not completed your studies, please include a written statement from the degree administration office (or equivalent department), confirming that you are enrolled on the final year of your education and giving your expected completion date. If you receive a conditional offer, you should present your degree certificate to the Admissions Office before enrollment at the latest. Applicants following longer technical programmes and who have completed courses equivalent to an amount of 180 ECTS, will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

2. Language requirements: Proof of English proficiency

Applicants must provide proof of their English language proficiency, which is most commonly established through an internationally recognized test.

IELTS
A minimum overall mark of 6.5 is required, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic Training accepted). IELTS-tests are verified online by KTH admissions office, sending a photocopy of your test together with your application documents is therefore sufficient.

TOEFL English test results from TOEFL must be sent directly from the ETS test centre to KTH Admissions Office (institution code 7966, department code 99). Examinee score reports or photocopies are not accepted. Please also note that neither TOEIC nor institutional TOEFL are accepted as sufficient proof of English proficiency.

The following TOEFL test scores are accepted as a minimum:
Paper-based test: total result of 580 (written test, grade 4,5)
Internet-based test: total result of 92 (written test, grade 22)

University of Cambridge/ University of Oxford Certificates
Certificate in Advanced English (minimum grade C).
Certificate of Proficiency (minimum grade C).
Diploma of English Studies (minimum grade C).

English proficiency tests are waived for the following:

• Applicants with a bachelor's degree from a university in USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand, with English as the only language of instruction.

3. Documentation

Note that all applicants - regardless of prior applications - need to submit a complete application package consisting of the following documents before the application deadline. Please read the admission requirements and application instructions before sending your documents.

1. A signed cover sheet (generated from the web-based application)
2. A correctly certified copy of your Bachelor’s degree in original language and translated into English. (Read more about conditional acceptance in case of ongoing studies).
3. A correctly certified copy of your transcript of records in original language and translated into English. All courses taken must be included. If possible, please provide the university course descriptions from your university study guide or university website. Descriptions of the following courses should be included: multivariate calculus, linear algebra, computer science and programming.
4. Proof of English proficiency.
5. GRE test-scores, if available.
6. A Curriculum vitae including details on your academic career.
7. A letter of motivation.
8. A copy of your passport or some other kind of identification in English.
9. Two letters of recommendation from professors of the most recently attended higher institution or from employers if relevant.
10. If you have work experience or other (publications, patents, posters, etc.) to support your application, please include certificates of these in your application.

Send your documents to the address on the cover sheet and keep an eye out for the link to the Erasmus Mundus Complementary Information form. It will be sent to you via e-mail when we have received your application documents. Your application is not complete without it.

Document requirements

Copies of degree certificates, transcript of records and statements should be stamped and signed by the degree administration’s office of the issuing institution, or by a Notary Public. The documents must be both in original language and in officially certified translations into English. Applications that are not supported by officially certified documents will not be processed. Applications with fraudulent documents will invariably be rejected.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

The EACEA (the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency) awards 7 to 9 category A scholarships and 7 to 9 category B scholarships per Erasmus Mundus Master's programme. Candidates who apply for an Erasmus Mundus Master Programme are considered for a scholarship nomination for this specific programme.

Category A scholarships can be awarded to applicants from non-EU member states (with exception of Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland) that have not resided in a EU member state or in Norway, Liechtenstein or Iceland, for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years (by 28 February of the year of enrollment).

The category A scholarship includes:

• Participation costs (including insurance coverage): € 8000 per year
• Monthly allowance: € 1000 per month
• Travel and installation costs: € 8000 for a 2 year programme

Category B scholarships can be awarded to applicants from EU-member states and to applicants from Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland.

The category B scholarship includes:

• Participation costs (including insurance coverage): € 4000 per year
• Monthly allowance: € 500 per month
• Travel and installation costs - only if the Erasmus Mundus Master's programme includes a mobility period to a Third-Country partner: € 3000

Application instructions

An application consists of five steps. Please read the admission requirements and application instructions before sending your documents.

Step 1. Create a user account

Create a user account at the webpage of University studies in Sweden. A user account can be created in advance, before making your actual application. If you already have a user account, please use the existing one and do not create a new one.

Step 2. Make a web-based application

Once you have created a user account you can apply to the Erasmus Mundus programmes coordinated by KTH in accordance with the application deadlines.

Click Add courses to add the programme of your interest. Then click To application to create an application in your name. In case you have selected more than one programme (you can apply to maximum two Erasmus Mundus Master’s programmes coordinated by KTH in this application round), the next step will be to rank the selected programmes in order of preference. Then mark the box for supporting documents and submit your application.

Note that the Erasmus Mundus Master’s programmes are exempted from charging an application fee.

Step 3. Print the cover sheet

After submitting the web-based application form you will be able to access the cover sheet which should be sent with your supporting documents. This cover sheet should be printed and signed. If you cannot do this straight away, you will be able to access and print it later on by logging on to your account . The cover sheet contains your personal data and is essential for matching the actual documents with your online application. Applicants with a Swedish civic registration number do not have access to a cover sheet. Instead they should write their civic registration number on any documentation they submit to University Studies in Sweden.

Step 4. Send your application documents

Your application should consist of the signed cover sheet along with all the required documents (correctly certified) regardless of prior applications. Documents required may vary from programme to programme, it is therefore important that you read the document descriptions carefully. Send your application package to the address given on the cover sheet:

Once your documents have been received by University Studies in Sweden you will be notified by email when your documents have been scanned and matched with your application.

Step 5. Fill out the complementary information form

As a final step we will ask you to fill out the online Erasmus Mundus Complementary Information form. You will receive an e-mail with a link to the online form when you have sent in your documents. Note that your application will not be complete without the complementary form, so look out for this message.

Throughout the process you will be able to follow your application and receive messages by logging on to your account .

Processing of personal data

Your personal data and information about your eligibility will be stored in the admissions database.
The National Admissions Office as well as the Swedish universities and university colleges will process your data for assessment, merit rating, selection and admission. How this register is to be run is governed by Swedish legislation (SFS 1993:1153; with alterations).
The Swedish Principle of Public Access to Information means that the public and the mass media are entitled to receive information about state and municipal activities. In accordance with this, information about your application and qualifications will be accessible to the public on request.
