Fellowships for Threatened Scholars from Iraq

Overview

Since 2003, hundreds if not thousands of Iraqi scholars have been killed, specifically targeted by various factions and militias intent on destroying the intellectual capital of Iraq. Untold thousands have been threatened and forced to flee while others are trapped in the country, unable to teach, conduct research, or carry out productive academic work.

In response to one of the greatest academic crises of our time, the Institute of International Education's Scholar Rescue Fund (SRF) launched the Iraq Scholar Rescue Project. This new project aims to assist more than 150 of Iraq's most senior and most threatened academics in any academic discipline – through temporary academic positions at universities, colleges and other institutions of higher learning in the Middle East and North African regions. (Some exceptions may be considered for university positions in other world regions.) In doing so, the Scholar Rescue Fund hopes to contribute to the preservation of Iraq's vital intellectual capital and ensure that, when conditions permit, these scholars will be able to return home to rebuild their once flourishing academic communities.

Eligibility

Iraqi academics, established researchers and professors in any academic field or discipline may apply. Scholars are selected for fellowship support based on (i) the quality and extent of their academic experience and (ii) the urgency of the threats they face.

Preferences will be given to scholars:
•with a Ph.D. or equivalent in their field;
•who have been employed in advanced academic activities at a university, college or other higher learning institution;
•who demonstrate superior academic accomplishment; and whose selection is likely to benefit the academic community in Iraq and in the host country; and
•who have published in their academic field.

Applications from female scholars and scholars who are members of ethnic, cultural or religious minority groups, or those otherwise underrepresented in their field, are encouraged.

Scholars currently residing in and those recently departed from Iraq may be considered. However, the length of an individual's time outside the area of danger may be a factor in the decision to award or decline a request for fellowship support.

Application & Process

Candidates may apply directly or be nominated by a third-party. Each application undergoes a comprehensive screening process. Applications which meet the eligibility criteria are submitted to the Iraq Scholar Rescue Project Selection Committee for final selection. The Selection Committee – comprised of academics and leaders in both business and non-governmental organizations – meets four times per year: in February, May, September and November. Applications and nominations are accepted at any time throughout the year.
