Overview
Scholarization: the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) has started a new scholarship for selected fields, called the Special Scholarship for International Doctoral Programs. Our school, the Graduate School of Informatics at Kyoto University, will be offering 8 new Ph.D. course openings through the scholarship from the year 2010. The new program has several attractive features such as the official language being English (Japanese Language skill will not be required); and the fact that all tuition fee will be waived. Selection will be made by Kyoto University, and successful students will be recommended to the Monbukagakusho as candidates for the scholarships.
Courses and Number to be Admitted
The Graduate School of Informatics, Kyto University, consists of the following departments:
- Intelligence Science and technology
- Social Informatics
- Applied Analysis and Complex Dynamical Systems
- Applied Mathematics and Physics
- Systems Science
- Communications and Compter Engineering
Each applicant must choose one of he above as his/her majoring when applying for this program.
Number of applicants to be admitted
8 successful applicants will be admitted.
Each applicant to join the International Doctoral Program in Infrmatics at Kyoto University must satisfy all the following conditions:
Note: Applicants may not submit another application for this Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship through another organization.
Eligibility
He/she must be from a country with which Japan has official diplomatic relations, and must be currently studying/working outside Japan. Those who are currently staying in Japan are not eligible to join this program.
Age: He/she must be under 25 years of age as of April, 2010.
Academic Qualifications
- Hold a master's level degree
- Have 2 years or more experience in research at universities or research institutes following graduation from an undergraduate program, after completion of a 16-year school education, and possess an academic ability equivalent to that of one who holds a Master's degree.
- He/she shall be 24 years of age or older and have an academic ability higher than or equivalent to master's degree holders of the Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University.
Letter of Recommendation
Physical and mental health
Each applicant must be physically and mentally healthy enough to carry out his/her studies at Kyoto University
Language Ability
Each applicant must be comfortable communicating in English
Other Conditions
- Each admitted student must arrive in Japan between October 1 and October 7, 2010.
- Any applicant who is affiliated to any military entity at the end of March, 2010, is ineligible.
- Any applicant who receives scholarship money from his/her governmet or from any other foundation, will not be accepted as the recipient of the Japanese Government (monbukagakusho) Scholarship.
Scholarship Value
- Stipend: Approximately 158,000 yen per month. This will be provided for a maximum of 36 months, but will not be paid in cases of extended leave from academia.
- Travel expenses
To Japan: an economy-class plane ticket between the international airport closest to the admitted student's home address and Kansai International Airport will be provided.
From Japan: a return air ticket to return home from Japan will be offered on the condition that he/she will be leaving Japan immediately after the scholarship ends.
School fees: Entrance and tuition fees will be waived.
