USA: Harvard College Japan Summer Internship Program

Overview

Harvard coordinates a wide array of summer internship opportunities in Japan for undergraduates in any concentration. As interns, students lean about the local culture of their city and work place while contributing to a project defined by the host organization. Since 1988, nearly 300 Harvard College students have worked in consulting and financial firms, on the campuses of top Japanese universities, in the office of parliamentary members and NGOs, in leading science labs, and even in a propeller factory, a hotel bakery, and an antiquarian bookstore.

Internships last a minimum of 8 weeks, from early June to early August. Students may ask RI to help match their interests with host organizations in Japan, or they may find intern hosts on their own and apply to RI only for funding support.

Application is available on CARAT (https://asperin.fas.harvard.edu/carat/), Harvard's web-based common application tool.

Application deadline: MONDAY, JAN. 4, 2010. For more information contact Theodore Gilman, Associate Director, Reischauer Institute.

AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT: March 2010

Students applying to the HARVARD COLLEGE JAPAN SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM are strongly encouraged to also apply to the DAVID ROCKEFELLER INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE GRANTS PROGRAM.

-----------
Overview of David Rockefeller International Experience Grants Program

Thanks to a gift from David Rockefeller SB ’36, LLD ’69, Harvard is able to provide significant funding to support students going abroad during the summer as part of their Harvard College experience. The purpose of the grant is to afford all students the opportunity to take part in a significant international experience, regardless of financial constraints. The David Rockefeller International Experience Grants Program was developed to give students the opportunity to gain a broader understanding of the world beyond the U.S. or their home country, and to learn about other countries and peoples by spending time immersed in another culture.

A significant international experience may consist of:

- study abroad
- thesis or other research
- internships, service, volunteer or other work
- participation in a qualifying Harvard-run program, including Harvard Summer School study -abroad programs
- Eligibility requirements

Applicants should be currently enrolled Harvard College students in good standing at the College at the time of application and participation.

Applicants may not have received a David Rockefeller International Experience Grant in the past.

Applicants must return to campus for at least one semester following their experience abroad.

Student projects/programs must take place in the summer and must be at least eight consecutive weeks in duration and require a full-time commitment from the student to the project for the duration of the project/program.

Students may apply for independent projects or any Harvard or Harvard-approved international programs that meet the Committee’s requirements for significant international experience.
