USA: Reischauer Institute Supplementary and Completion Dissertation Grants, Harvard University

Overview

The Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies provides limited support to Harvard doctoral candidates who are in the dissertation research or completion stage in any field of Japanese studies in the humanities or social sciences, when other sources of funding are insufficient. A limited number of RESEARCH or COMPLETION grants of up to $20,000 will be available for the academic year 2010-11. A student may receive each of these only once. Students applying to the Reischauer Institute for support are required to apply elsewhere as well.

Application Information

The Reischauer Institute (RI), participating research centers, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) use a standard application form for the dissertation fellowships. Applicants for this grant should use the form called the "Dissertation Completion Fellowships Standard Application (and Fellowships with Research or Completion Option)" and refer to the cover sheet designated for the RI Supplementary Dissertation Grants. Refer to links above for application form and instructions. This information can also be obtained from the GSAS website.


Instructions

(1) Obtain application form. Carefully peruse the form in its entirety, then follow "Instructions to Applicant" with attention to the "Checklist" which outlines the required documents to attach to your application. In addition, instructions specific to the Reischauer Institute application:

(2) Applicants should submit one original and four copies of a complete application.

(3) Include itemized budget for the period/project for which support is requested, and the specific amount requested from the Reischauer Institute (e.g. $18,000 for 9 mos., July–March). Separate sheet of 1 page. NOTE: You must inform the Institute if you receive any other award for this proposal after you submit this application.

(4) Two Letter of Recommendation (signed and sealed) must be submitted with the application unless an exception is granted (in which case the letters being sent separately must reach the Institute by the application deadline). Advisor's letter should indicate the current stage of the dissertation. NOTE: only one copy of each recommendation needed; the Reischauer Institute itself will duplicate copies.

Applicants for the Completion Category are also required to:(A) Submit two draft dissertation chapters, or the equivalent, to the dissertation advisor. Fulfillment of the two chapter requirement should be confirmed in both letters of recommendation. (B) Submit the "Confirmation of Draft Submission Form" (signed by the dissertation advisor) with application.
(5) Under "List of Fellowships Previously Received," please include previous funding from the Reischauer Institute. State grant, year, and amount.
