USA: Reischauer Institute Summer Research Grants for Graduate Students, Harvard University

Overview

The Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies will offer several Summer Research Grants to Harvard graduate students in the humanities or social sciences whose work focuses on Japan. In addition to doctoral candidates, continuing students in Harvard Masters programs will be considered, as will graduating Harvard Masters students who will enter a Harvard Ph.D. program in the following year. Applicants must usually have completed at least three years of Japanese language study, or have comparable proficiency in the language. Grants are normally for summer research travel from Harvard to Japan, and return. (Grants up to $4,000.)

Application deadline: must be received by FEBRUARY 12, 2010. Award announcement: March 26, 2010

Application Information

The Reischauer Institute (RI), participating research centers, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) use a standard application form for the summer graduate fellowships. Applicants for this grant should use the form called the "Graduate Student Summer Fellowships, Standard Application" and refer to the cover sheet designated for the RI Summer Research Grants for Graduate Students 2009. Instructions

(1) Obtain application form. Carefully peruse the form in its entirety, then follow" Instructions to Applicant" with attention to the "Checklist" which outlines the required documents to attach to your application.
In addition, instructions specific to the Reischauer Institute application:

(2) Applicants should submit one original and four copies of a complete application.

(3) Statement of Purpose should outline the research to be conducted, schedule, and research sites. Proposal should be brief, c. 2-4 pages. [NOTE: In some cases, research projects involving living human subjects must be approved by the University’s Committee on the Use of Human Subjects in Research (CUHS). You are responsible for making sure that the project conforms to University guidelines. If your project requires approval from the CUHS, you will need to secure it and submit documentation to the Reischauer Institute before you can receive an award. (4) Official Harvard Transcript of Grades. (Only 1 original necessary; other 4 copies may be duplicates.)

(5) Two Letters of Recommendation (signed and sealed). These must be submitted with application unless an exception is granted (in which case recommendations being sent separately must reach the Institute by the application deadline). One letter should be from current faculty/thesis advisor in the Japan field. (Only one original of each recommendation needed; the Reischauer Institute itself will duplicate these.)

(6) Itemized Budget for the summer project, indicating other sources of support including other summer grants for which you have applied. Will you be receiving a summer stipend from your department or GSAS? (If yes, please state amount.) Specify amount requested from the Reischauer Institute & duration (e.g., $4,000 for 3 months, June thru August). NOTE: You must inform the Institute if you receive any other award for this proposal after you submit this application.

(7) If you have received previous funding from the Reischauer Institute, state grant, year, amount.
