Professtional Doctorate Programme: University of Bristol and University of Bath
Westwind is the world's largest specialist air bearing designer and manufacturer. Westwind air bearing spindles are used in PCB manufacturing, automotive coating, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and many other markets where performance needs are outside the scope of conventional bearing technology.
Air bearing benefits include high precision, high integrity design solutions, high rotational speed, consistent performance and long life. These aspects have potential uses in new applications outside traditional areas:
1. Fuel cell gas compression for Proton Exchange Fuel Cells
The application of air bearings in place of mechanical bearings is to enable compressors to be designed which have a key requirement of zero contamination of the fuel cell chemistry combined with added benefits of long life and efficiency.
2. Fuel cell anode gas recirculation for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC)
SOFC systems that recycle the anode exhaust gas, which is mixed with incoming fresh fuel, have a higher efficiency and offer the potential for lower overall system cost. Air bearings enable the design of a compact, zero contamination, blower for this application.
3. Heat recovery power generation
In a similar way to fuel cell applications, heat recovery systems require bearings with minimal risk of contamination of refrigerant combined with added benefits of long life and efficiency.
The overall purpose of the programme is to enable Westwind to diversify its market for air bearings. As the basis for the Research Engineer's (RE's) EngD, he or she would be a core member of the team working in Poole, Dorset and would apply systems thinking methods to research and design of sub systems exemplified above and would optimise their integration with the wider systems within which they are incorporated.
Candidates should have a minimum of an Upper Second (2:1) class honours degree (or equivalent).

•EU applicants - fees only award
Funding Amount
A tax-free EPSRC stipend (£14,790 for 2009/2010) is available for the successful candidate. Tuition fees will also be covered. Standard EPSRC studentship eligibility applies. Please check your eligibility before applying. Non-eligible individuals are welcome to apply, but must be able to find alternative funding.
