Cuban Undergraduate Scholarships 2010 for Sri Lankans

Overview

Applications are invited from eligible Sri Lankan Students for the award of 5 Undergraduate Scholarships in Medicine offered by the Republic of Cuba for the year 2010.

01. General Eligibility requirements:-

(a) Should be a citizen of Sri Lanka.
(b) Age should be less than 25 years on 03.05.2010
(c) Should have passed the G.C.E. (A/L) Examination conducted by the Department of Examinations, Sri Lanka with subjects relevant to the field applicant intends to apply.
(d) Should possess a high proficiency in English.
(e) Should be in good health and ready to live in Cuba during the period of study.
(f) Should not be employees under the Government or a statutory body.
(g) Should not be a student already registered or following an undergraduate course at any University or a full time course of study in a state sector Higher Educational Institution in Sri Lanka.

02. Medium of Study: Spanish Language

03. Terms of Award:

(a) Government of Cuba will pay for the Education of the Scholar, Apprentice Studies, Lodging, Food and Medical Care.
(b) The cost of air ticket to Cuba and back should be borne by the students. However the Ministry will bear the cost of the air ticket in case of students from Samurdhi recipient families or deserving students of low income families on case by case basis.

Note: Selected candidates must arrive in Cuba between 23rd & 30th August 2010 in order to do the preparatory studies in Spanish Language.


04. Special Notes

(a) Conditions laid down in this notification may vary as per the criteria imposed by the awarding country without prior notice.
(b) If any student declines the offer after the selection through the interview, he/she will not be considered for any of the scholarships during the year.
(c) Candidates who are awarded a Scholarship for undergraduate studies would not be considered for admission to any local University.
(d) Candidates after the receipt of placements cannot decline the Scholarship except under a situation that the Higher Educational Institute concerned is not recognized by the Sri Lanka Medical Council.
(e) Extension of the period of the Scholarship will not be recommended by this Ministry.
(f) Field of study selected at the beginning will not be allowed to change later under any circumstances.
(g) Preference will be given to students from distant rural areas and low income families.

5. Applications:-

(a) Every Application should conform to the specimen form provided.
(b) Each Applicant should submit only one application for award, and should state whether he /she has been nominated for a similar award in the past.
(c) The words "Cuban Undergraduate Scholarships, 2010" should be hand or type-written on top left corner of the envelope containing the application.
(d) Any statement in the application, which is found to be incorrect before selection, will render the applicant liable to disqualification. If such inaccuracy is found after selection it will lead to the withdrawal of the award.
(e) A non-refundable payment should be made by affixing a stamp to the value of Rs.50/- in the cage provided for this purpose in the application and cancelled by the candidate's signature.
(f) Any application, which is not sent through the proper channels or incomplete in any respect or received late, will be rejected.
(g) Closing Date: Applications will be accepted only up to 4 p.m on 03.05.2010
(h) Applications should be sent to the following address by registered post or by hand to reach on or before the closing date.

6. Nominations & Final Selections

(a) Nominations will be made through an interview after short listing of applications received as per this Notification. These nominations will be sent to the relevant Selection Authority of the Republic of Cuba through the Embassy in Colombo.
(b) The originals of following documents should be submitted at the Interview.

Certificate of the G.C.E. O/L Examination
Certificate of the G.C.E. A/L Examination (including the Z Score)
Birth Certificate
National Identity Card/ Postal Identity Card or valid Passport
Evidence for extra curricular activities

(c) The final selections will be made by the Republic of Cuba accordingly. Therefore, candidate should not treat nomination for the scholarship as an acceptance for an award.
