Overview
Measurements of ecosystems respiration (both autotrophic and heterotrophic) and their responses to environmental conditions gradients, particularly drought. Modeling of different ecosystem respiration components by integrating gained knowledge into GOTILWA+ processes description.
Program Description
Ecosystem respiration is composed of various compartments, from leaf maintenance and growth, though to the stem, fine roots, and soil respiration. This makes it difficult to accurately model, and thus contributes the highest uncertainty when modelling net ecosystem exchange for terrestrial ecosystems. It is also poorly understood how each compartment responds to water stress and nutrient availability. This project aims to reduce this uncertainty through field measurements along an environmental gradient and subsequent model development and integration of knowledge gained into the forest model Gotilwa+.
Target ecosystems: those measured by existing experiments and available databases (as FLUXNET and other field experiments,...)
Activities such as Model inter-comparison in relation to ecosystems respiration responses to environmental conditions will be performed as well as model applications using climate change projections to evaluate the impacts on carbon balance.
As result of this research project the applicant will acquire:
- Field measurements skills; the design and execution of experimental studies.
- Advanced statistical techniques for data analysis.
- Visual Basic and C computer languages.
- Scientific knowledge about model-data fusion techniques - terrestrial carbon cycle modelling on a local and a European scale or even larger.
- Complex computer models, structure and application, code writing and debugging
- Presentation skills through group seminars and cluster meetings, discussion skills also through institute colloquium
- Paper writings: Managing references and library databases
- Ph D thesis title.
Research Field
Environmental science - Ecology
Eligible candidates
Any previous knowledge and experience that would help on the job description development described above will be taken into account for the applicant evaluation. Make it clear on the applicant CV, particularly skills on field measurement techniques and use of equipments as well as modeling, programming languages and data bases management.
Early-stage researchers must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date when the applicants obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate program. See www.greencycles.org/vacancies
After Bologna agreements, at the Spanish Universities, this means: after finished a Master of Science degree related with the Ph D program and have completed at least 300 ECTS (i.e. 3 years degree + 2 years of Master or 4 years degree + 1 year Master). Other cases will need an specific evaluation of the Ph D program comity
