Short-Term Academic Placements for Africans in Canada

Overview

Participants of the Africa Initiative Exchange Program conduct research and work with academic staff and researchers at the University of Waterloo (UW) or Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU), as well as collaborate with researchers at The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI). The program is open to full-time master’s and PhD students at Makerere University (MAK).

The Africa Initiative Exchange Program is currently accepting applications for participation from May to August, 2011.

The application deadline is December 31, 2010.

To be eligible, applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree in good academic standing and must be enrolled in master’s or PhD program on a full-time basis at MAK, focusing on one of the Africa Initiative’s thematic areas of conflict resolution and mediation, energy, food security, health, and migration—with special attention to the cross-cutting issue of climate change.

Program Options

•Student Exchange: available to master’s students enrolled at MAK; this option provides participants the opportunity to conduct research and audit classes at the host institution.
•PhD Dissertation Preparation: available to PhD candidates at MAK; provides access to academics and researchers at the host institution conducting academic work related to the participant’s research, assisting the participant in preparing his or her doctoral dissertation.

The program includes: round-trip airfare, accommodations, health insurance, coverage of program costs at the host institutions and an additional grant for the fellowship period to cover subsistence costs.

Application Requirements

•Completed application form (forms can be obtained by emailing aiexchange@cigionline.org)
•Statement of interest outlining current research interests, proposed research plan during the exchange, program expectations, and relevant research skills (2-3 pages)
•Current transcript
•A sample of written academic work
•Two (2) letters of recommendation from academic sources (must be emailed by the referee to aiexchange@cigionline.org)
•Current CV

Program expectations: participants are expected to provide content for the Africa Initiative’s Africa Portal on a regular basis during the exchange, write one major academic piece for the Portal at the end of their placement, and give a presentation of their research at a CIGI-hosted seminar.

Short Research Articles: Participants will submit short research articles once per month (three in total). Participants will be provided with select topics to choose from each month and will be expected to produce backgrounders and policy briefs for publication on the Africa Portal.

Major Research Paper:Participants will produce one major research paper based on their research at the conclusion of their participation. Topic selection will be the responsibility of the participant, with the expectation that the topic aligns with one of the Africa Initiative’s thematic areas.
