Overview
DocMASE – European Joint Doctoral Programme in Materials Science and Engineering
The DocMase doctorate programme is the consequent next step in the already existing structures for international education in the framework of EUSMAT, and will be jointly offered by:
- Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany
- National Polytechnic Institute of Lorraine in Nancy, France
- Technical University of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain
- Luleå University of Technology in Luleå, Sweden
- Linköping University in Linköping, Sweden.
Besides the five partners, 20 associated partners from academics, research and industry take part in DocMASE.
The aim of DocMASE is to provide a high level research structure for the best students from Europe and the rest of the world. Research projects organised in close cooperation by two universities of the consortium will be offered. Co-advisory is an integral part of the project, thus students will be assigned an advisor from each university where he/she carries out the research work.
Students can opt for an academic or an industrial focus in their research. Throughout the PHD, doctoral students are required to go to one of the partner universities for at least six month, and additionally to one of the associated partners for at least two weeks.
DocMASE was selected in a very competitive process in the ERASMUS MUNDUS programme. From the winter semester 2011, DocMASE will be able to deliver from 6 to 10 ERASMUS MUNDUS scholarships for the best applicants of EU and non-EU countries.
A European Certificate of Excellence will be awarded to PhD students who engage in different international activities, such as a stay at the partner institution, summer schools, workshops, etc.
Scope of the Research Fields
High impact of the research activities on the actual needs and breakthrough in materials science and engineering can be obtained by research and training in the four following key topics:
Topic 1: Advanced bio-, and nano-composites
Topic 2: High-performance metals
Topic 3: Engineered surfaces
Topic 4: 3D Microstructure characterisation in micro, nano, and atomic scale
ERASMUS MUNDUS Fellowships
DocMASE has been chosen by the European Commission as part of the ERASMUS MUNDUS Programme. These ERASMUS MUNDUS fellowships are awarded to the best applicants of the current application period.
They cover a fixed amount of travel costs (7500€) for third country students and a fixed monthly allowance for an employment contract for both, EU and third country students.
General admission criteria:
Master of Science or an Engineering degree in the area of MSE, Chemistry or Physics with a background in materials or related engineering disciplines.
Students can still apply if they won't have finished their master or engineering studies within our application deadline. In this case, a professor's note has to be attached to your application attesting that you will have finished your studies until August 31st 2011.
Very good English language knowledge demonstrated with correspondent language certificates. Knowledge of other relevant languages like German, French, Spanish and Swedish are favorable.
