ICCC Fellowship for Community-based Intellectuals/Activists

Overview

Purpose: The ICCC recognizes the wealth of expertise and experience that resides outside of the institution’s wall. The ICCC is committed to reaching out to build and sustain partnerships, and to supporting faculty who are engaged in such partnerships. The ICCC Fellowship for Community-based Intellectuals is designed to support the scholarly activities of community-based intellectuals (such as indigenous knowledge keepers or religious/spiritual leaders, practitioners, queer community, NGO leaders, for example) who are working in partnerships with University of Saskatchewan faculty. This fellowship is designed to assist a community-based intellectual to come to the University of Saskatchewan to work in partnership with a University of Saskatchewan faculty member on an academic project, a major grant application, and or project development.

Term: 2 weeks to 3 months

Value: Office space and a computer station (if desired), university library privileges, enhanced opportunities for research networking and exchange, participation in the ICCC’s scholarly activities and community, and up to $1,000 in support of research or travel to the University of Saskatchewan.

Eligibility: Individuals not employed by a university, and especially people whose training and education have come from non-academic sources and followed non-academic pathways and who are sponsored by a University of Saskatchewan faculty member or academic unit.


Conditions: The successful application will:

•Participate actively in the programs and activities of the ICCC
•Give at least one seminar / lecture or public presentation on the theme of their research or art
•Acknowledge the ICCC in any publications arising from Fellowship
Applications Procedures: Applications must include one copy of each of the following:

•A letter or recommendation from the University of Saskatchewan faculty sponsor nominating the applicant
•One additional letter of recommendation by a person other than the faculty sponsor (to be requested by the applicant and sent directly to the ICCC by the referee)
•A CV or resume
•A descriptive title and a summary of the project in layman’s terms (150 word maximum)
•A detailed description of the project’s objectives, the research plans, and a clear demonstration of how the project fits within the ICCC mandate (2 page maximum)
Application Deadline: Applications may be submitted at anytime. Completed applications should be submitted to the attention of the ICCC Director at i.ccc@usask.ca.

Appointment: Appointments will be made by the ICCC Director upon recommendation of the ICCC Adjudication Committee. The Adjudication Committee will be chaired by the Director of the ICCC (ex officio) and will consist of the one member of the ICCC Executive Committee, one member of the ICCC Outreach Committee, and the Associate Director of the ICCC (ex officio). The Adjudication Committee may also solicit the opinions of scholars within the applicant’s field of study.

Adjudication Criteria: The Adjudication Committee will be guided by a desire to recognize an individual who will make a significant contribution to the advancement of interdisciplinary scholarship in the broadly defined areas of culture and creativity. The Community-based Intellectual Fellows are those that have a local or national or reputation for intellectual engagement and the sharing of ideas as demonstrated by the level of community engagement and the impact of their work.
