Denmark: PhD Scholarship in mussel aquaculture and the impact of salinity and phytoplankton

Overview

A PhD Scholarship in “Nutrient removal by mussel aquaculture – impact of salinity and phytoplankton” is available at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) with starting date May 2010.

The project will be carried out in the Section for Coastal Ecology which is situated in Charlottenlund.

The project is financed by The Danish Council for Strategic Researchand includes several Danish (DSC, DMU, DSU, DTU Aqua, KU, Bolding Burchard Aps) and International partners (New Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, Bedford Institute of Oceanography, University of Dalhousie).

DTU Aqua is an institute at the Technical University of Denmark. The purpose of DTU Aqua is to provide research, advice and education at the highest international level within the sustainable exploitation of living marine and freshwater resources, the biology of aquatic organisms and the development of ecosystems as well as their integration in ecosystem-based management. The institute has an international research staff comprising approx. 90 academic employees.

Project description

The PhD scholarship is part of a large project, which aims to develop nutrient extraction cultures as a combination of biological production and a tool for mitigating effects of eutrophication in Danish coastal areas using blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) as culture organism. Nutrient extraction cultures can provide new opportunities for removal of excess nutrients in coastal areas concomitant with the production of food products.

The specific aim of the PhD is to investigate the impact of low salinity and phytoplankton composition on the growth and efficiency of the blue mussel cultures in removing phytoplankton and thereby nutrients from coastal areas. The impact of the occurrence of blooms of cyanobacteria on the efficiency of the mussel cultures and possible counter measures will also be investigated. This will be achieved through field and laboratory studies of mussel filtration, growth and behavior as a function of salinity and cyanobacteria/phytoplankton composition. The filtration and growth responses of the blue mussels to low salinity, cyanobacteria and other phytoplankton will be used to assess the nutrient extraction potential of blue mussel cultures in Danish coastal areas.

Eligible Candidates

We are looking for a candidate who has:

• Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree, or equivalent, in Aquaculture or Aquatic Sciences
• Previous experience in aquatic research
• Proficiency in written and spoken English
• Keen interest in aquatic research
• Experience with mussel research, grazing experiments, phytoplankton/cyanobacteria, and organismal behavioral research
