Denmark: Technical University Denmark PhD Scholarship in numerical modeling of the boundry-layer wind profile

Overview

Applicants are invited for a PhD position (3 years) at the Wind Energy Division at Risoe DTU starting mid 2010 as part of the Tall Wind project. The project aims at investigating and enhancing the understanding of the wind profile for the whole boundary layer (in the order of 1 km) with the specific purpose to provide improvements for the modeling basis of wind energy assessment calculations.

Duties and Responsibilities

The PhD research will focus on micro and boundary-layer meteorology of agricultural, coastal, urban and to minor extent marine sites. Improved theoretical insight on the structure of the boundary layer with emphasis on the wind profile will be achieved through use of RANS and LES modeling techniques. The effects of the boundary-layer height and the conditions in the free atmosphere on the wind profile within the boundary layer will be studied. Experimental information on the structure of the boundary layer will be available for model evaluation as part of the Tall Wind project. Tasks include to a lesser degree maintenance of instruments and analysis and interpretation of data. The student will develop own research thesis within the scope of the Tall Wind project.

Eligible Candidates

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree. Also strong interest in boundary-layer meteorology, numerical modeling, data analysis and keen to learn more. Background in meteorology, physics, engineering, physical geography or other relevant areas will be considered.

We offer

The student will join a dynamic international program working on meteorological aspects of wind energy and wind energy assessment with a well established international collaboration with universities, research institutions and industry. The work will be carried out in close connections to other participants in the Tall Wind project: the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Hamburg University, Vestas Wind Energy and DONG Energy.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.

Application requirements

We must have your online application by 15 April 2010. Please open the link “apply online” and fill in the application form and attach CV, statement demonstrating appropriate skills and interest (1 page), examples of previous research (e. g. master thesis, published papers) and name of two referees. Also you should indicate when you will be available to start a PhD study.
