Overview
This is a full-time studentship and funding will start on 1 October 2010. It is one of two studentship awards currently offered by the School of Education. One will be funded by an ESRC studentship award and the other by a School of Education award. The allocation of the awards will be at the School's discretion and applicants should not indicate a preference. Both awards cover full PhD fees at the UK/EU rate and provide a monthly stipend (£13,290 per annum in 2009) to eligible applicants. The stipend is tax free and is therefore equivalent to a gross salary of approximately £17,000 per annum.
Eligible Candidates
ESRC Studentship: applicants with either a first class or upper second class Bachelor's Honours degree may be considered for the ESRC Studentship. ESRC-funded PhD students will need first to complete an accredited research training programme at Masters level by following the School's MA in Educational Research Methods (1+3 route), and funding for the four years would be offered. Students who have already completed an ESRC accredited research training Masters either at Nottingham or elsewhere in the UK can apply directly to the PhD programme (+3 route). For details of the MA in Educational Research Methods see:
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/education/prospective/researchdegrees/educationalresearchmethods.aspx. The full ESRC award (fees plus stipend) applies only to Home/EU students who satisfy the ESRC's eligibility requirements. EU candidates who do not meet the residency criteria will be able to apply for fees only. For further details on eligibility see:
http://www.esrcsocietytoday.ac.uk/ESRCInfoCentre/opportunities/postgraduate/studentships/standard/Quota.aspx.
School of Education Studentship: applicants for the School of Education studentship will normally have either a first class or upper second class Bachelor's Honours degree and may have a higher degree (Masters). School studentship applicants with an upper second class degree and no Masters degree can register for the School's MA in Educational Research Methods followed by the PhD (1+3 route) and funding for the four years would be offered. Those with a first class degree can follow the 1+3 route or register directly onto the PhD and take part in a programme of research training. Students classed for fee purposes as overseas nationals may be awarded the School of Education studentship but will only qualify for the stipend and payment of fees at the home rate (due to funding restriction). Overseas students will have to pay the balance of the international fee and will have to indicate in their application how the remaining fees will be paid (e.g. other sponsors, self-financing).
