Overview
The International Masters in Economy, State and Society (IMESS) is an established two-year double degree Masters programme, taught in English and offered by a consortium of leading European universities headed by UCL - London’s research and teaching powerhouse and one of the top five universities worldwide (THES–QS 2009). IMESS draws on an unparalleled pool of resources to offer the definitive Masters course focusing on the economies, states and societies of Central and Eastern Europe.
The programme, recognised for its excellence by the European Union's Erasmus Mundus Programme, offers three distinct study tracks, reflecting the unique multidisciplinary expertise of the consortium institutions. The study tracks are:
•Politics and Security
•Economics and Business*
•Nation, History and Society
Each track combines specialist electives (economics, politics, society or history), research methods training (social sciences or humanities), and language tuition (Czech, Estonian, Finnish, Hungarian, Polish or Russian) with an advanced research dissertation conducted during the latter part of the degree.
* To be eligible for the Economics and Business track, applicants must normally have studied both Macroeconomics and Microeconomics as part of their undergraduate degree.

Who is IMESS for?
The Masters programme is designed to attract and challenge the brightest EU and international students (final year undergraduates may apply) as well as professionals wishing to retrain to acquire European expertise and meet the challenges of the changing global environment. Evidence of English language ability is essential but there are no other language pre-requisites. Students from all states may apply to the programme and there are Erasmus Mundus Scholarships for both EU and non-EU students.
Additionally, for established International Scholars the IMESS consortium offers a number of fFellowships for Visiting Scholars of between 2 weeks and 3 months to be spent at one of the consortium universities, conducting research in the spirit of IMESS and contributing to the teaching of IMESS.
Scholarships
Category A scholarships can be awarded to students who come from a country other than an eligible applicant country (EU member-states and EEA-EFTA states) and who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of these countries. N.B.: students holding a Category A scholarship may not spend their second year in Russia.
Category A applicants satisfying the Erasmus Mundus criteria (Category A) are eligible to apply for an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship of €24,000 per year (€48,000 in total). Scholarship holders must pay tuition fees to the IMESS consortium of €14,800 per year (€29,600 in total). These monies will be deducted from the scholarship and scholarship holders will receive a balance on a monthly basis.
Category B applicants satisfying the Erasmus Mundus criteria (Category B) are eligible to apply for an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship of €10,000 per year (€20,000 in total). Scholarship holders must pay tuition fees to the IMESS consortium of €6,250 per year (€12,500 in total) if they are EU citizens or €14,800 per year (€29,600 in total) if they are non-EU citizens. These monies will be deducted from the scholarship and scholarship holders will receive a balance on a monthly basis. Recipients of Erasmus Mundus Scholarships (Category B), entering the IMESS programme in 2011, will be entitled to a partial fee waiver of €2,250 per year (for EU citizens) or €6,800 per year (for non-EU citizens).
Applications to IMESS
UCL is implementing a new online application system. Unfortunately, this means we will be unable to accept online IMESS applications until mid-October 2010. Please note that there is no disadvantage in waiting until after mid-October to submit your application. Decisions on the award of scholarships are not made until after the respective deadlines. If you wish to apply before mid-October you can send in a postal application to the UCL Registry.
