Overview
This PhD project will focus on the development of quantitative models that can help to find solutions for the new risk management challenges that pension funds and insurance companies face in the wake of the financial crisis. Possible subprojects concern asset and liability management for illiquid investments, the use of derivative contracts for risk mitigation or strategic asset allocation, and longevity risk management.
The position is partially funded by Netspar, the Network for Studies on Pensions, Aging and Retirement. Research by the PhD candidate will be carried out within the Netspar theme 'Reconciling short term risks and long term goals for retirement provisions'. The project will require the development of academic writing skills and quantitative methodological skills, as well as the ability to access and acquire secondary and primary data.
Requirements
■A Master's degree (MSc or drs) in the area of econometrics, actuarial sciences, quantitative finance or (applied) mathematics
■Excellent theoretical skills coupled with an interest in the practical implementation of scientific methods
■Strong track record and the ambition to publish internationally
■Mastery of both written and spoken English

The candidate will be based at the Department of Quantitative Economics and at the research institute of the Amsterdam School of Economics, RESAM. The university is located in the centre of Amsterdam and there is a lively research-oriented and collegial atmosphere in the Department.
Appointment
The appointment will initially be for 1.5 years, to be extended to a total of 4 years upon excellent performance (two evaluations will be held, one after 10 and one after 14 months). The salary will be in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel, and will range from €2,042 (first year) up to a maximum of €2,612 (final year) gross per month, based on a full-time appointment. The collective employment agreement of the Dutch universities will be applicable. The PhD thesis should be finalized within four years. A suitable educational programme will be established for the candidate at the start of the appointment, which will depend on his/her background.
