Overview
The NOHA European Master's in International Humanitarian Action was selected by the European Commission among the first 19 Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses, involving 82 European universities, which started at the beginning of the 2004-2005 academic year. Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses are selected for five years. This implies that the NOHA consortium has committed itself to maintaining the Course and to hosting third-country students and scholars for five academic years running.
The Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education which promotes the European Union as a centre of excellence in learning around the world. It supports European top-quality Masters Courses and enhances the visibility and attractiveness of European higher education in third countries. Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses constitute the central component around which Erasmus Mundus is built. They are high-quality integrated courses at masters level offered by a consortium of at least three universities in at least three different European countries. The courses must be "integrated" to be selected under Erasmus Mundus, which means that they must foresee a study period in at least two of the three universities and that it must lead to the award of a recognised double, multiple or joint diploma.
NOHA Mundus Partnership
Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses also have the possibility of establishing partnerships with third-country higher education institutions in order to encourage European universities to open themselves up to the world and to reinforce their world-wide presence.
NOHA has established an Erasmus Mundus Partnership with 7 third-country higher education institutions. The NOHA Mundus Partnership provides a framework for mobility for European Union graduate students and scholars and for third country students and scholars. The duration of the Partnership is three years. The institutions involved are the seven European NOHA Network members (Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium, Université d'Aix-Marseille III, France, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany, University College of Dublin, Ireland, Universidad de Deusto, Spain, University of Uppsala, Sweden, and University of Gröningen, The Netherlands) and the following third-country institutions:
•Monash University, Australia•Universidad Javeriana, Colombia
•Bangalore University, India
•Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia
•Saint-Joseph University, Beyrouth, Lebanon
•University of Western Cape, South Africa
•Columbia University, United States
The objectives of the NOHA Mundus Partnership which follow from the general
objectives of the NOHA Erasmus Mundus Master's Course are:
1. To establish and develop a framework for cooperation and students and scholars mobility between the NOHA Mundus institutions and a selected number of third-country universities and programmes.
2. To respond to the challenges raised by the new environment in which international humanitarian action works and to further the development of humanitarian assistance education through an agreed programme of joint research and training.
3. To advance in cooperation at worl level by a common understanding of the importance of international humanitarian action and its developments through courses jointly designed and elaborated.
4. To enhance the quality of European higher education by fostering co-operation with third countries in order to improve the development of human resources and to promote dialogue and exchange for a better understanding between peoples and cultures.
Activities involved: The following of specific modules and tutorials from selected programmes related to humanitarian action in every institution. It also involves team research jointly supervised by local academics and NOHA scholars.
The partner institutions will provide an input during the last component of the NOHA Mundus programme (D. Research and Work Placement Component) during the months from July through to September.
Erasmus Mundus Student Scholarships
The Erasmus Mundus Programme provides EU-funded scholarships for Third Country students (Category A) and European students (Category B) who have applied to and have been accepted by the NOHA Mundus Masters Course.
Third-country graduate student (Category A)
Third-country graduate student means a national of a third country other than those from EEA-EFTA States and candidate countries for accession to the European Union; who has already obtained a first higher education degree; who is not a resident of any of the Member States or the participating countries (EEA-EFTA States and EU candidate countries for accession); who has not carried out his or her main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the Member States or the participating countries.The amount of the student grant is EUR 35, 600. Each grantee will receive EUR 1,600 each month for living costs during the 16 months duration of the program plus a fixed amount of EUR 10,000 to be paid in two instalments of EUR 5,000 each per year.
There is the possibility to profit from up-to 2 extra sholarships for Category A students under the Western Balkan (i.e. Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo under UNSC Resolution 1244/99, FYRoM, Montenegro and Serbia) and Turkey window. The amount of the student grant is EUR 34, 000. Each grantee will receive EUR 1,000 each month for living costs during the 16 months duration of the programme. The scholarship also includes a fixed amount of EUR 8,000 as a contribution to travel installation and any other type of costs to be paid in two instalments of EUR 4,000 each per year and a contribution to the NOHA Mundus participation costs (EUR 10,000).
European graduate student (Category B)
European student means a person who is a national or a resident of any of the EU Member States, the EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and the candidate countries for accession to the EU (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Croatia and Turkey) and who has already obtained a first higher education degree. The amount of the student grant is EUR 17, 000. Each grantee will receive EUR 500 each month for living costs during the 16 months duration of the program.
The scholarship also includes an amount of EUR 3,000 as a contribution to travel installation and any other type of costs for the mobility period to a third country institution and a contribution to the NOHA Mundus participation costs (EUR 6,000).
Erasmus Mundus Grants for Scholars
Scholarships will also be awarded to scholars enrolled in Third-Country institutions who will be selected by the NOHA Mundus consortium to contribute to the joint programme. As the NOHA consortium includes Third-Country partners, there are also scholarships for scholars enrolled in the NOHA Mundus European institutions for the purpose of contributing to the joint programme within these Third-Country partners. The amount of the grant is Euro 1200 / week for a maximum duration of 3 months per scholar (from € 2400 for a two-week stay, to €14 800 for a 3-month stay.

Erasmus Mundus Grants for Scholars
Scholarships will also be awarded to scholars enrolled in Third-Country institutions who will be selected by the NOHA Mundus consortium to contribute to the joint programme. As the NOHA consortium includes Third-Country partners, there are also scholarships for scholars enrolled in the NOHA Mundus European institutions for the purpose of contributing to the joint programme within these Third-Country partners. The amount of the grant is Euro 1200 / week for a maximum duration of 3 months per scholar (from € 2400 for a two-week stay, to €14 800 for a 3-month stay.
