Overview
A PhD Scholarship in Life History Adaptation in Marine Fishes is available at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) with starting date December 2010.
The project will be carried out in the Section for Population Ecology and –Genetics in Charlottenlund.
DTU Aqua is an institute at the Technical University of Denmark. The purpose of DTU Aqua is to provide research, advice and education at the highest international level within the sustainable exploitation of living marine and freshwater resources, the biology of aquatic organisms and the development of ecosystems as well as their integration in ecosystem-based management. The institute has an international research staff comprising approx. 90 academic employees.
Project description
Fish are phenotypically plastic and respond to changes in their environment by modifying their behavior and life history characteristics. How they cope with environmental change is important to understand in relation to climate change and fishing. Comparing within species differences in physiology, growth, mortality and reproduction along environmental clines will be used to reveal how fishes adapt their life histories to changes in environmental parameters. Models will be constructed to estimate how phenotypic change affects fitness within the distribution area of the species and how fitness relates to relative abundance. Cross species comparisons will allow the relative fitness of different life history strategies to be quantified, compared to differences in relative abundance and used to forecast how climate change may change the future distribution of the species. The work will initially focus on cod, but other species may be included as well.
Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate who has:
Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree, or equivalent, in Aquatic Sciences
Previous experience in quantitative ecological research
Proficiency in written and spoken English
Keen interest in research and a wish to work in the field of aquatic science
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.

The purpose of DTU Aqua is to provide research, advice and education at the highest international level within the sustainable exploitation of living marine and freshwater resources, the biology of aquatic organisms and the dynamics of ecosystems as well as their integration in ecosystem-based management. DTU Aqua has 280 employees, of whom a third are scientific staff. The other employees are assistant biologists, laboratory technicians, IT employees, administrative staff, ship’s crew, student assistants etc. The institute is organized into eight scientific sections which carry out the research, educational and advisory activities. In addition, the institute has a number of scientific and administrative support functions, including the research vessel DANA.
