Technology for Integrated Water Management: VLIR-UOS Scholarships, Belgium

Overview

’Technology for Integrated Water Management’ focuses on understanding the water system and on applying technology to enhance integrated water management and –policy. The programme aims to improve the understanding of concepts and systems and enhances knowledge regarding tools and technologies. This will enable innovative planning and action from a new perspective and approach.

This programme exists of 3 parts:

• The first part is focusing on the current state of knowledge regarding global water problems, integrated water management and integrated risk assessment.
• The second part focuses on technologies for industrial and ecological water usage.
• The third part offers an integration of all gained knowledge and confronts the student with several modelling aspects in a river basin management framework. The integrated approach demonstrates the interdependencies between the different subsystems which allows the student to think in river basin scale including all its aspects.


Admission requirements

Education: Candidates hold a master degree (or equivalent) in sciences, applied sciences, applied biological sciences or nautical sciences.
Professional experience: Candidates should be working preferably in the field of water management, water purification or water treatment. The candidates should have a good overview of water issues in the area they are living or working in. This overview will be used during the course. Candidates should be working at a University, research institute, NGO or governmental institute. People working for private companies cannot apply for this scholarship. Applicants must show strong institutional support from their employer. The applicant’s employer should state his support with an official letter.

Age: Preferably between 25 and 45 years.

Language skills: The working language of the course is English. In order to assure active participation, a good command of English in all aspects (spoken, written and comprehension) is a prerequisite.
Candidates who received their university education in English must provide an official certificate stating that the language of instruction was English.
Applicants whose university studies were not completed in English must provide one of the following test results:
• TOEFL certificate (Test of English as a Foreign Language, www.toefl.org): a minimum total score of 550 on the paper based test, or a minimum total score of 79 on the Internet based test (the test validity is max. 2 years);
• IELST (International English Language Testing System, www.ielts.org): with a minimum overall band score of 6 (the test validity is max. 2 years);
• Knowledge level B1 of the Common European Framework
• Or equivalent tests from accredited language testing organizations.
• Please note: test validity is maximum 2 years!
Motivation: applicants must demonstrate their competence to transfer the acquired knowledge to their home country.

The course will accept 2 types of participants :

1 VLIR/UOS grantees : up to 15 scholarships will be granted to candidates who have submitted the full VLIR/UOS scholarship application form (see VLIR/UOS website at http://www.vliruos.be) after a call for such applications has been made. Such applicants should come from the Belgian Development Co-operation list of co-operating countries and not be employed by VLIR/IUC partner universities; the selection will aim at a gender balance (50-50), a good spread over South-East Asia, Africa and Latin-America but with special emphasis on Sub-Sahara African countries.
2 Other applicants who pay for their participation fee (about 2500 euros) themselves or by other sponsors.


In both cases candidates should belong to the age category of in between 25 and 35 years, have some professional experience (at least one year) in academic, scientific or technological libraries and have a minimum of technical background allowing them to manage computers in libraries like for digital libraries and library automation.

Country of origin: only residents of countries on VLIR-UOS’ list of developing countries are eligible for university development cooperation (download the complete list from www.vliruos.be). Candidates must reside in their country of origin at the moment of the application and the training.
Gender: the selection commission will aim for equal participation of men and women.
Financial resources: only applicants who do not dispose of alternative sources of funding may be selected for a VLIR-UOS-scholarship.


Type of certificate

A certificate attesting the participation of the student and listing the topics of the training.
