Overview

Post-doctoral Fellowship at the Centre for War Studies, 1 November 2010-30 October 2011
The Centre for War Studies intends to appoint a Post-doctoral Fellow from 1 November 2010 for twelve months for the following purposes:

- To pursue advanced research in the field of First World War Studies;
- To organize a conference at the Princess Grace Irish Library (PGIL), Monaco, on the subject: “Ireland in the Decade of the Great War, 1912-1923”, under the auspices of the CWS and the PGIL, to be held in Monaco;
- To spend several short periods at the PGIL giving a public lecture, furthering the PGIL’s educational programmes in Monaco, and liaising with the staff of the PGIL in organizing the conference.

The preferred candidate will:

- Hold a PhD degree in a relevant field;
- Be engaged in research and publication on the history of the First World War;
- Have proven organizational and managerial skills commensurate with organizing an international conference;
- Have some familiarity with the French language.

Remuneration will be in line with the rates paid by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences at €31,000 p.a. plus PRSI and pension contribution. Funding for the visits to Monaco will be covered.

The successful candidate will work closely with Professor John Horne as the senior scholar on the conference project and with Professor Alan Kramer as Director of the CWS, of which she or he will be a member.

The purpose of the conference, which will be planned in consultation with Professor John Horne, is to consider 1912-1923 as a trajectory of violence in Irish history; to do so in a comparative international context; to involve leading French, Italian and German scholars of the Great War in an effort to broaden awareness of contemporary Irish history in those countries; and to include selected civil servants, politicians and civic leaders from both North and South in the conference in order to foster consideration of how to commemorate the founding events for the two parts of Ireland during the centenary period.
