IRL PhD Scholarships in Science or Business, Victoria University of Wellington

Overview

The IRL PhD Scholarships in Science or Business at Victoria University of Wellington have been established by Industrial Research Ltd in recognition of its very close relationship with the University, and particularly with its Faculties of Science, Engineering, and, more recently, with the Victoria Management School within the Faculty of Commerce and Administration. Specifically, they will assist in fostering entrepreneurial and commercial skills among young New Zealand scientists to help the country maximize the commercial return from innovative scientific research. The Scholarships have been established through the Victoria University Foundation.

Criteria

Applications are invited from postgraduate students undertaking a PhD degree at Victoria University of Wellington in the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering or the Victoria Management School of the University’s Faculty of Commerce and Administration. It is expected that the successful applicants will be working on a thesis of direct relevance to IRL’s research and commercial interests.

Scholarship Value

IRL will contribute an annual stipend value of $25,000 for each scholarship. Tuition fees will be paid by Victoria University for the initial four scholarships. Four Scholarships will be awarded in the first year, and further Scholarships will be awarded on completion of these.


Scholarship Tenure

Each Scholarship will be held for up to three years.

Application Process

New PhD applicants should complete the PhD Admission and Scholarship application form available from http://www.victoria.ac.nz/fgr/prospective-phds/applying.aspx http://www.fis.org.nz/BreakOut/vuw/schols.phtml?detail+100008 and clearly indicate they also wish to be considered for the IRL PhD Scholarship. Current PhD candidates should complete Victoria PhD Scholarship application form also clearly indicating they wish to also be considered for the IRL PhD Scholarship.

Applicants must provide any supporting documentation requested and will be considered in two rounds – 1 July and 1 November.

Selection Process

The successful applicant will be selected by a panel consisting of members of the Victoria University Research Scholarships Committee, representatives of the Faculty in which the student will be enrolled (Associate Dean of Students and the prospective Faculty or School supervisor), in consultation with Industrial Research Ltd.

Accountability

Recipients are required to write a letter acknowledging the award to Industrial Research Ltd through the Victoria University Foundation. Recipients are also required to submit biannual progress reports to Industrial Research Ltd as well as a copy of their thesis on confirmation of conferment of their PhD degree.

Industrial Research Ltd and Victoria University will develop an agreement as to the exploitation of any IP which may be developed during the research.
