Overview
The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studiesis an institution of research and higher education dedicated to the cross-cutting fields of international relations and development studies.
Each year the Graduate Institute awards several scholarships to Master and PhD students. Awards are based on academic merit and financial need.
There are three categories of scholarship:
Full scholarships: with a few exceptions, these are worth CHF 18,000. Recipients are exempt from Graduate Institute tuition fees; however they are still required to pay University of Geneva tuition fees. Some full grants are awarded subject to special conditions (duration of study and/or geographical origin of students).
Partial scholarships: the value of these grants varies according to the individual needs of the recipient student. These grants do not cover tuition fees which recipients of partial grants are required to pay.
Tuition scholarships: these grants cover tuition fees for one academic year. They are awarded to exceptional students.
Scholarships are awarded for one year, with the possibility of renewal.
Admissions
Based on a rigorous selection process, applications to our study programmes are reviewed once a year. Applications must reach us no later than 15 January 2011 for the following autumn semester; the academic year begins in mid-September.
The admissions process for Master and PhD programmes beginning in September 2011 is now open. The closing date for receipt of applications is 15 January 2011.
Language requirements
The Institute is a bilingual English-French institution; students are therefore required to demonstrate their knowledge of these languages by including the relevant certificates with their application forms.
English
Level required: candidates are required to demonstrate excellent command of the language, both written and spoken, confirmed by a language certificate: see details.
Candidates of English mother-tongue and those who have completed secondary or post-secondary education in English, confirmed by a diploma, are exempt from this requirement.
French
Level required: a passive knowledge of French can be acquired during the first study semester; knowledge of French will be tested at the beginning of the second semester (February or March).
Candidates of French mother-tongue, candidates who have completed secondary or post-secondary education in French, confirmed by a diploma, or candidates who have obtained a French diploma equivalent to a DELF B2 are exempt from this requirement.
Request for a waiver of the French requirement: candidates with no prior knowledge of French may request a waiver [pdf]. Upon successful acceptance to the Institute, they will be required to attend an intensive French course during the three weeks preceding the beginning of the autumn semester and for the duration of the first semester; upon completion of the course they will be required to pass a language test.
Masters Academic Requirements
Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree (minimum 180 ECTS credits) or an equivalent qualification in a discipline relevant to the chosen programme:
Master in International Affairs (MIA):
Bachelor’s degree in law, economics, history or political science – or a related discipline, or a multidisciplinary Bachelor’s degree in international relations. Holders of a Bachelor’s degree in another discipline and with a sound academic record are also eligible to apply.
Master in Development Studies (MDEV):
Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, sociology, law, economics, history, political science, geography – or a related discipline, or an interdisciplinary Bachelor’s degree in development studies or international relations.
Master in Anthropology/Sociology of Development:
Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, sociology or a related discipline, or a multidisciplinary Bachelor’s degree in international relations or development studies.
Master in International Economics:
Bachelor’s degree in economics, or a related discipline, or a multidisciplinary Bachelor’s degree in international relations. Applicants to the Master in International Economics must have passed the GRE test.
Master in International History and Politics:
Bachelor’s degree in history, political science or a related discipline, or a multidisciplinary Bachelor’s degree in international relations.
Master in International Law:
Bachelor’s degree in law, or a related discipline, or a multidisciplinary Bachelor’s degree in international relations.
Master in International Relations:
Bachelor’s degree in political science - or a related discipline, or a multidisciplinary Bachelor’s degree in international relations.
PhD Academic Requirements

Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) or Master’s degree in Anthropology, sociology or development studies or in a related discipline + have completed, to the extent possible, a DEA- or Masters level research dissertation (please include a copy with your application).
PhD in Development Economics:
Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) or a Master’s degree in economics, development studies or in a related discipline + have completed, to the extent possible, a DEA- or Masters level research dissertation (please include a copy with your application). Applicants to the PhD in Development Economics must have passed a GRE.
PhD in International Economics:
Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) or a Master’s degree in economics or in a related discipline + have completed, to the extent possible, a DEA- or Masters level research dissertation (please include a copy with your application). Applicants to the PhD in Development Economics must have passed a GRE.
PhD in International Law:
Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) or a Master’s degree in law or in a related discipline + have completed, to the extent possible, a DEA- or Masters-level research dissertation (please include a copy with your application).
PhD in International History and Politics:
Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) or a Master’s degree in history or political science or in a related discipline + have completed, to the extent possible, a DEA- or Masters-level research dissertation (please include a copy with your application).
PhD in International Relations:

Application
A complete application file must include ALL the following documents (a certified translation must be provided for all documents in a language other than English, French, German, Italian or Spanish):
-A letter of motivation in French or English explaining your reasons for applying to study at the Institute (800 words maximum) ;
-Two complete curriculum vitae in French or English;
-Two copies of the official transcripts of all the grades obtained in all university exams, accompanied by grade scales and their values (with or without the final diploma);
-Two certified copies of all university diplomas and qualifications obtained;
-Two certified copies of secondary school diplomas;
-Two copies of the page(s) of your passport with your surname, first name and nationality. If you are a foreigner resident in Switzerland, please provide two copies of your residence permit;
-Four recent passport-sized photographs with your name written clearly on the back;
-Three letters of reference written in English or French. Appraisal letters can be submitted in sealed envelopes with the application documents or sent directly to the admission office by the referee. See Letter of Appraisal.
-Proof of payment of the application fees.
-In addition, where applicable, you must also provide the following document(s) with your application:
-A photocopy of the residence permit (only for foreign students resident in Switzerland);
-Photocopies of all language certificates and/or the waiver request duly completed (see the waiver request);
-A copy of the results of the GRE test (for applicants of the Master or PhD in International Economics);
-The grant application form (if you are applying for a study grant).
For PhD Programme candidates:
-A copy of your Master's dissertation;
-An outline thesis proposal (with at the minimum a provisional title and a brief description of the issue to be researched).
-Only completed applications will be considered. Please note that you are eligible to apply even if you are not due to receive your diploma until June 2011.
