Overview
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation/Wellcome Trust Diabetes and Inflammation Laboratory (DIL; Director, Professor John Todd) (http://www-gene.cimr.cam.ac.uk/todd ) has been at the forefront of recent developments in our analysis of the genetics of type 1 diabetes (T1D), with over 50 loci now associated with the disease. We are continuing efforts to detect additional genetic loci, localise causal variants and understand their function. Our ability to conduct statistical analyses of large datasets derived from evolving technologies has been central to our success.
A PhD studentship opportunity exists within our statistics group, led by Professor David Clayton (http://www-gene.cimr.cam.ac.uk/clayton ). The project, to be supervised by Dr Chris Wallace (http://www-gene.cimr.cam.ac.uk/wallace ), will involve the integration of transcriptomic (expression array) and genotype data, with a particular focus on T1D (Heinig, M. et al. Nature 467, 460-464, 2010). One of the key questions to be addressed is whether disease association in these known loci is mediated by genetic effects on expression, but we expect other interesting statistical problems will also arise in the analysis of these, and other, high dimensional and highly correlated data generated by, and available to, the DIL.
The ideal candidate will possess a first degree, and preferably an MSc, in statistics or a closely related discipline. They will have an enthusiasm for using statistics to address important biological problems and an aptitude for, and interest in, statistical programming.
For further information please contact Mrs Judy Brown - judy.brown@cimr.cam.ac.uk
The MRC Studentship (available to start October 2011) will only be open to EU applicants who meet the appropriate residency criteria as set by the MRC. For guidance please see http://www.mrc.ac.uk/Fundingopportunities/Applicanthandbook/Studentships/index.htm
Closing Date: 10th January 2011
Please apply in writing with current curriculum vitae, including the names and email addresses of three academic referees (one of whom should have been a project supervisor) quoting "MedGenMRC1" to: Ms Jenny Newton, Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, Wellcome Trust/MRC Building, Cambridge, CB2 0XY. Email: jennifer.newton@cimr.cam.ac.uk
