Overview
3 POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS AND
2 DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITIONS
in fungal pathobiology. Two years for postdoctoral researchers and four years for doctoral students. Start date: Immediately.
We are looking to recruit highly motivated postdocs and doctoral students to work in Applied bioinformatics, Functional genomics, Evolutionary fungal biology, or Fungal molecular biology with primary focus on developing a comparative genomics platform on Fungal Pathobiology.
Fungi (saprotrophs, pathogens, mutualists) associated with cultivated plants and forest trees are known to play fundamental roles in the health of cultivated crops and boreal forests, influencing their vitality and productivity. Comparisons at genomic and gene expression levels between the contrasting plant-fungus situations will help to forward our understanding of key elements in the interactions and the evolution of the various forms. Increasing wealth of fungal genomes sequences is becoming available. The key for maximal usage of data is in advanced methods of bioinformatics. Our aim is to develop a strong platform of theoretical expertise in fungal pathogenomics which will facilitate research and educational goals. This effort is supported by the Finland Distinguished Professor (FiDiPro) programme (http://www.fidipro.fi/pages/home.php).
Location: Departments of Forest sciences and Agricultural Sciences. Our laboratory is situated within the Viikki campus of the University of Helsinki. The research group is part of the larger Viikki Biocenter Research Organization with access to state of the art experimental and bioinformatics facilities (http://www.biocenter.helsinki.fi/).
According to University of Helsinki Statutes a person selected for the post of postdoctoral researcher is required to have a doctoral degree and the ability to do independent scientific work as well as having the necessary teaching skills.
A person selected for the post of doctoral student is required to have a Master's degree and an accepted research plan. In addition, he/she is required to have shown, when acquiring his/her degree and otherwise, the ability and motivation for postgraduate studies and completion of a doctoral degree in accordance with a study and research plan.
Applicants: Students and postdocs with good academic records and strong skills in Applied bioinformatics, functional genomics, evolutionary biology and molecular biology are welcome to apply to any of the positions. Knowledge in plant or forest pathology and mycology are considered as additional merits. A good knowledge of English is required.
The salary for postdoctoral researchers will be, depending on the appointee's performance and experience approximately between 34 000 and 49 000 (postdocs), and between 23 600 and 42 000 (doctoral students) euros per annum.
Written applications should be sent to Prof. Fred O. Asiegbu, Department of Forest Sciences, P.O. BOX 27 (Latokartanonkaari 7), FI-00014, University of Helsinki, Finland to arrive no later than December 22nd, 2010 by 15.45 (local Helsinki time).
The applications should contain CV, list of publications, and three referees’ reports. In addition, those applying for the doctoral student positions should also submit a research and study plan.
