China: 2010 China Scholarship Council Exchange Scholarships - Harvard University

Overview

Applications for Study or Research in China for Academic Year 2010-2011

The Committee on General Scholarships has announced scholarship opportunities for one year of study or research at selected universities in the People's Republic of China during academic year 2010-2011.

Up to five full scholarships (including tuition, campus housing, health insurance, and a stipend) and ten partial scholarships (including tuition only) are offered for study or research at approximately 80 Chinese universities authorized to admit foreign scholarship students. Admission to the selected university for scholarship winners is arranged by the Chinese Ministry of Education. The scholarships are available for Harvard undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants must be citizens of the United States.

This program is made possible through an agreement between Harvard University and the China Scholarship Council at the Chinese Ministry of Education.

How to apply

Application forms and materials for the Harvard University-China Scholarship Council Exchange Program are not available online. Interested candidates are welcome to stop by the Committee on General Scholarships (CGS) to pick up an application or can request one by contacting: bruzzese@fas.harvard.edu.

Completed applications are due before 5:00p.m. on Monday, December 7, 2009 at 5:00 p.m at the Committee on General Scholarships, 1430 Massachusetts Avenue, 6th Floor, Cambridge, MA 02138. Do not submit your application directly to the China Scholarship Council.

Directions for Completing the Application:

The application should be completed in English. It may be typed or handwritten.

Please note that the application includes a physical examination form, which must be completed by your doctor. We recommend that you ask your doctor to complete two identical originals of this form. One should be submitted with your application. Please save the other, which may help facilitate your visa process.

Candidates should submit the following materials in support of their application (as listed on page 3 of the application form):

• Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship.
• Two Letters of Recommendation.
• You do not have to include an “Admission Letter or Admission Notice of Chinese Universities” unless you have applied and been accepted to a program separately from this application process. (Most applicants will leave that blank, and indicate the University where they wish to study in question 5.)
• The application requires an official copy of your transcript.
• If you are an undergraduate student or a graduating senior, you should not submit a diploma. All other students should submit a photocopy of their last diploma along with an official transcript.
• Foreign Physical Examination Form (including any attachments).
• The “Study Plan” should be at least 500 words describing why you want to undertake your proposed plan of study, what you expect to accomplish, and how it will advance your academic goals. If you have been communicating with scholars in China with whom you plan to work, please include that information in your essay.

Common Questions about the Application Form

• On question 5a, please indicate the enrollment status you are requesting while in China. Do not indicate “degree candidate” unless you are pursuing a degree from a Chinese university. Senior Scholars would already have a Ph.D.
• On question 5c, please list the university and alternates where you wish to enroll. You must choose from one of the universities authorized by the Ministry of Education to accept foreign students. We have a list of these in our office. You may call or make arrangements to stop by the office to confirm that your choices are on the list. The China Scholarship Council will help facilitate your admission/placement.
• On question 9, Please enter “Harvard University” as the person recommending you for this scholarship.
• Question 10, the name of the person supporting your case in China should be left BLANK unless you are already working with or have arranged to work with a research partner in China.

The CGS administrative staff is happy to answer any questions you may have as you complete your application. Please feel free to contact Rebecca Bauer at 617-496-5042 or rbauer@fas.harvard.edu, or Lisa Bruzzese at 617-496-5052 or bruzzese@fas.harvard.edu for assistance.
